For my 3rd mock draft attempt, my main assumptions continue to be
1. No trades in this version.
2. We do not draft a kicker, but rather go with Buehler, Hughes, or a veteran if neither of the young guns work out.
Also, this draft clearly leans towards offense.
Round 1
M Iupati, OG, Idaho, 6-5 1/2, 330, 5.24 40
I continue to stick with Iupati in Round 1 as I believe that there is a 50/50 chance he drops to 27. It is questionable (at least in my mind) that SF or Pitts takes an OG in the top 20 picks. Can it happen? Sure. But I think that the probability is not particularly high. And from everything that I've read, no one is projecting Iupati to LT in a couple years either.
From the Cowboys perspective, it's well known that OG depth is needed for at least this year - and an eventual starter as early as next year (Kosier) if not earlier.
An OG can he taken later in this Draft, but I believe that Iupati has the potential to be much more than a typical OG prospect. I think that with good coaching he can be a Pro Bowl calibre OG. Finally, Iupati's size and demeanor fits in nicely with the team's OL philosophy (going back to the early 1990s).
Round 2
D McCluster, WR/RB/KR, Miss, 5-8 1/2, 172 lbs, 4.44 40
To me, McCluster represents a "now" and "later" pick. Let me explain. McCluster is a niche player who will get significant reps from Day 1 on STs. He'll be on the active roster early on. He'll also be able to run a few offensive plays - probably designed for his skill set - during a game as well. McCluster is perhaps one of the few players who can help us in a meaningful way from the get-go as a rookie. As McCluster gains more experience over the next couple of years, he can continue to later on add new dimensions to our offense.
McCluster is not going to be our number 2 wideout in 2011 or 2012, but he's the type of player that every team will have to account for on every play - whether he's lining up in the backfield or in the slot.
Round 3
Major Wright, FS, Florida, 6-0, 206 lbs, 4.44 40
He can play centerfield. He's tough. And he will hit. And he's got good range. He can legitimately challenge K Hamlin for the starting spot over the next two years.
I have to admit, I would love to also somehow land D Dickerson from Pitt as well. I just think he would be a nightmare for defenses to cover and would really give our offense yet another dimension and weapon. But having to choose between Wright and Dickerson, and given that I've already picked McCluster in Round 2, I decided to lean towards Wright.
Round 4
Jamar Chaney, ILB, Miss State, 6-1, 242 lbs, 4.5 area 40
Very good speed, athletic, and good size. Has also played some OLB so Chaney offers some versatility. He was starting to show very good production before his 2008 leg injury. Since then, Chaney has shown good production (fully healed) and is starting to come into his own.
Round 6
John "The Terminator" Conner, FB, Kentucky, 5-11, 246, 4.64 40
Traditional fullback who is an explosive and accurate blocker. Athletic enough to hit moving target. Also has soft, reliable hands, and he can pick up tough yards. Conner has extensive STs experience as well.
Cricket may be wearing out his welcome on the Cowboys (off the field issues, etc.) Conner is an athletic blocker (old style), can pick up tough yards when running inside, and he plays very well on STs. Plus, the Cowboys have shown interest in him. Sounds like a potential pick.
Round 7
J Webb, OT, West Texas A&M, 6-7, 335 lbs, 5.29 40
He's got the size, can anchor, and seems to have the talent to mold. Of course, there are off the field questions that the Cowboys have to check out. But if the Cowboys are satisfied after their due diligence, I think Webb could end up being a nice 7th Round find in about 3 years.
