Woodson is no Dorsett

I laughed when I read the article about Woodson and the #28 jersey. While Woodson was a great Cowboy and a great football player on and off the field to think that no one should wear #28 is foolish. For the past 3 years, a 7th round 4th string corner wore #33. Dorsett was one of the greatest RB's to play the game, a Hall of Famer and Ring of Honor player and I don't ever recall him whining about someone wearing his jersey.

I can't imagine more than a handful of people objected to FJ wearing #28.

Was Woodson whining about it? That sounds totally out of character for him.

yeah that doesn't sound like him at all....

i mean it does seem weird sometimes when you see guys wearing certain numbers that you associate with great Cowboys, like 28, 33, 74, 54.....but then i remember that even one of our greatest players ever, Emmitt, wearing 22, which at the time when he got that number was associated i believe with Hayes? someone correct me if i'm wrong about that

but the point is that Emmitt turned the #22 into a legend, and i still think that Jerry should get rid of this "no retired numbers" garbage, and get around to putting 8, 22, and 12 up on the rafters in the new stadium....

i got slightly off point, but what i'm saying is that we may get a player like Emmitt at somepoint to wear the number that we associate with a great player, and make it associated with a legend.

i think the part that annoys most of us fans is when players who don't live up to any expectations wear the number and it almost makes it feel tarnished....like Nate Jones who was brought up by the OP

The only numbers that have not been worn since the players retired (at least not during the regular season) are: 74 (Lilly), 12 (Staubach), & 8 (Aikman).

They usually assign #74 to someone in camp because there are a limited amount of linemen numbers to go around but whoever wears it in camp changes it prior to the start of the season if they are still on the roster.

20, 22, 33, 88, 54, etc. have all been worn by a number of players after whatever great player wore them because there aren't enough to go around at those positions.

The Cowboys have never officially retired any number but those 3 (74, 12, & 8) are not given out.

Frankly, Woodson was a great player but not an elite one (like Lilly or Staubach) and numbers in the 20s have to be utilized because of the number of players at those positions.

Tyson Thompson wore #28. Why not Felix Jones?

74 was worn in Camp by Canty before he switched to 99. But never during a season.

Almost every year someone wears it in camp but not in the regular season.

I think 22 will join those three....it hasn't been worn since Emmitt and I don't see it being put back into circulation any time soon.

I think Felix Jones will represent the number 28 well, so Woody won't have to worry... Well all know how great of a player he was!

It's petty of Woody to complain about somebody wearing "his" number, when he knows the Cowboys have never retired any number...

But y'know, he did so much for the Boys in his career that I'm gonna forgive him this one brief moment of pettiness... after all, he's been nothing but class for a lot of years, but we're all human...

We didnt hear his tone. He could have been playing around, or just discussing his feelings. Not necessarily complaining. I didnt hear it myself, but you never know. Media can/will twist intent for a story.
