Two workers fall on roof of Cowboys Stadium

Posted by Mike Florio on December 3, 2009 10:06 AM ET
During the construction of the new Cowboys Stadium, at least two workers accidentally died.

On Thursday morning, the facility claimed two more victims.

Two workers slipped and fell while working on the roof of the massive football and entertainment venue, the Associated Press reports.

The workers fell from an upper portion of the roof to a lower section.

Per the AP, Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said that the workers were performing "ongoing maintenance," which will continue into 2010.
Dalrymple said that he did not know the extent of the injuries, and he also said that he was unsure whether cold weather was a factor in the incident.

In May, the team's indoor practice facility collapsed during a thunderstorm, injuring several people, two severely.
Federal occupational safety and health laws impose many specific requirements to protect workers from many hazardous situations, including slips and falls. The federal agency responsible for enforcing those laws -- OSHA -- undoubtedly will be investigating the incident in order to determine whether any of the relevant rules and regulations were violated.
UPDATE: The Dallas Morning News reports that the injuries appear to not be life-threatening.

Geez, I work at a refinery, and routinely climb tall structures. I never do it without fall protection, and my employer requires it.

Safety harness?

This is nothing but idiotic, but I'm glad the workers didn't die, though they very well could have.

Cowboys Stadium workers hospitalized in stable condition
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 3, 2009 7:13 PM ET

The two workers who slipped and fell while working on the roof at Cowboys Stadium this morning suffered what authorities called "significant injuries." But they are now in stable condition.

The Cowboys released a statement on behalf of Manhattan Construction saying that the two workers slipped on some ice and slid 250 feet down the main roof to a gutter at the bottom.

"Both employees were taken from the roof by Arlington Fire Department and transported to nearby area hospitals," the statement said. "Their conditions are stable at this time."

The statement said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is currently at Cowboys Stadium investigating the incident. Dallas Assistant Fire Chief Don Crowson said the workers were not properly secured on the roof.

"I know that it is a common practice that you should be wearing safety gear in a high elevated position," Crowson said. "The reports I have right now is that they were not using safety equipment."

One worker was reportedly knocked unconscious, broke a leg and suffered injuries to his head and chest in the fall. The other worker suffered a back injury.

BTW, the earlier reports said the workers fell 20 feet or whatever it was from one level to the next. DC.com has a blog post where the contractor said the guys slid 250 feet down the roof onto a gutter.

Imagine how scary that would be.

Edit, dang you WG!

No safety harness is the contractors fault. It is not the Cowboys.

For those unfamiliar with the story on Thursday, two workers on the Cowboys Stadium roof under icy conditions were injured.

The men fell several feet off the roof's peak before sliding at least 50 feet onto a parapet around the edge. Click here for a video about the incident.

Thats right it is not the Cowboys Fault. Where I work it is required if you are more than 4ft..yes that is 4ft off the ground you are required to have a saftey harness on, and I do not work in any kind of construction.
