I found this pretty cool site where you can see how the world's borders have changed over time. You can click on Europe, the Middle East, North America or wherever and then click on a button to advance or regress the years and see how the countries have changed. It starts at 3500 BC and goes up to 2005 AD. Fun tool for a history buff.

What I find interesting is how many borders have changed over the past 100 years.

The end of WWI was a massive game-changer. Some for the good... Some for the bad.

Most people living today wouldn't recognize Eastern Europe or Middle East or Africa of pre WWI.

Yea, especially when most people, and especially our fellow Americans, are so naive when it comes to the history of Europe and/or the rest of the world......I remember my mom arguing with me once when I was in high school, that her side of the family wasnt from Germany, they were Prussian, lol......I tried to explain to her that it was essentially the same thing as being one of the original 13 colonies before we became the United States, to no avail.....and she's a college educated nurse, so not a moron........I also once got in an argument with 2 Nebraska cops, who claimed Texas "wasn't around during the Civil War, they didnt come into play until the Western Days".......I still smh to this day over the stupidity, I know you dont have to have much education to be a police officer, but c'mon now!

Most for the bad. It's a long story, but for the most part Great Britain screwed up big time in how it partitioned the Middle East after WW I. The heart of the problem was Britain making the decisions instead of letting the people who lived there decide.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. I have one just as bad. In 1988 I visited Berlin, which was still divided between east and west at the time. In East Berlin I met an American man about my age. We talked a little about history and I wondered out loud if it were possible to find any remnants of Hitler's bunker or if the communists had hidden or destroyed it all. He asked, "Why would Hitler be in East Berlin?" Major facepalm!

Agreed.

The way they mapped out the Middle East was just begging for future problems.

I'd hate to know how many out of a 100 people on the street could tell you where the Ottoman Empire was... Considering it existed for centuries and only ceased to exist less than a 100 years ago.

A while back I overheard someone ask their friend if he knew where the Ottoman Empire once existed.

He asked back, "Is that where they made furniture?"

True story.

Walk down the street in any major city and the majority of the people couldn't even tell you how many Supreme Court justices there are (let alone their names) or even the name of the Vice President or speaker of the house.
But hey, they can vote.

On a positive note...
Thanks for the link!

It's not that knowing about the Ottoman Empire is going to yield huge rewards... I just thinking having an appreciation for history makes us a little better people.

Or how they shape our country.

When one is appointed it should be every bit as serious as a presidential election, IMO.
