Yep, absolutely. I miss Netscape. I know Firefox is a lot of the same people and similar, but it's not the same. Probably just nostalgia.

And ICQ...man...

Netscape Navigator was the A #1 premier search engine until MS decided to squash it like a cockroach with the bundling of IE. AOL wound up buying Netscape for $4B+, they got a whole bunch of nothing. I was able to get 3 thousand shares at the ipo price, I absolutely killed it on that trade, actually my guy killed it on that trade. Marc Andreessen the founder was in his early 20’s at that time and became a multi millionaire instantly. Today he’s a venture capitalist, smart smart dude and worth about $2B.

I also used Napster when it was the current thing.

I rememer using pre-1.0 beta versions of Netscape Navigator

I also had a 5-digit ICQ id and three 6-digit ids.

On a side note, I'm developing a project that is partially inspired by ICQ

I remember (on BBS's) going from 300, to 1200, to 2400, to 14.4, then 33.6 and finally to 56k before going to DSL and beyond. Each time, I was awed at how much faster it was. Now I'm sitting at 550 Mbps down and 550 Mbps up. I'd probably pull all of my hair out going back to 300 baud.

Same path for me plus 9600 and 19.2k as well.

I had a Hayes Smartmodem 2400 and USRobotics Courier 2400 modem with one running a BBS 24/7 and the other for outgoing connections.

I skipped 9600 and 19.200. I BBSed a lot as a kid. I don't know how many hours I wasted playing Trade Wars, and later LOTR and Netrunner, Trade Wars 2002, VGA Planets and others I can't remember.

That 2400 Hayes Smartmodem was a solid piece of tech. Mine had an aluminum frame if I recall..or some kind of shiny metal and black ends. Red lights. I then switched to USRobotics for 14.4. I miss those login sounds, but not the speeds. haha

Ahhhh, the good ole' days. I miss the young internet. It just had a different vibe. Everything was still so new and shiny.

I remember everybody at the bachelor pad absolutely living on AOL Messenger. A/S/L

I also remember all of us sitting around staring at the computer and laughing at funny videos on eBaum's World. Back then, finding a funny clip was a novelty. Today, that's basically all the internet is.....video clips.

I lived on Napster (until it got shut down) and then LimeWire, downloading music. I would always find some "hacked" free version of Norton Antivirus and have that as my safety net. Never had too many problems.

Oh, and I can't not mention building out your first MySpace page. You'd throw up your profile pic, some stupid quote you thought was deep at the time, and you could even have a music video playing to welcome your visitors.

Man... the young internet was something else. It used to feel like you were discovering things, rather than being absolutely bombarded by it 24/7.

Edit: Oh and how about e-mail chains? When friends would actually e-mail each other and send those stupid "you have to send this to 10 people or have bad luck" e-mails. haha

I remember all of those. Some other distant memories:

• Prodigy and AOL free trials.
  • For that matter, does anyone remember when you could grab a CD for your free 56k trial.
• When consoles and PCs had very separate computing power and games.
• Back when people complained about PC Game Add-ons (now known as Deluxe Edition or Season Pass), not realizing the entire market was eventually going to be one big micro transaction market.
• MySpace gawdy personal sites.
• When people used to actually read spam and even send it to their friends.
