I once hated Jacks, but I recently got one and he is a great joy to have. I have taught that dog at least 60 words and he learns very quickly. Jack's are smart. I've seen bigger, smart breeds too like the Golden retriever and the Belgian Sheepdog..

Many smart breeds, but the first Jack I lived with ruined it when he crapped in my work loafers. But this new one is housebroken and is just a great, great dog.

I'm allergic to cats, so that's why I don't care for them.

Hooray for cool pets, though.

I was a pavement pounder, a car salesman at the time. So I wore comfortable, pseudo work shoes.

A lot of Golden retrievers are seeing eye dogs.

You don't think Golden's are smart dogs? My Golden is very smart and has been taught lots of stuff. I think you're are extremely confused if you think Golden's are dumb dogs.

I don't like Jacks. There's one in the front of my condo complex and he japs the **** out of everything that moves. his owner is awful. Jacks require a lot of exercise, and this one doesn't get much.

They're cool if you can take care of them properly. (obviously the owner in the video gives them lots of attention and exercise) They aren't quite my type of dog. Little to much energy. As you said, if you don't give them lots of exercise, they become very troublesome. It's obvious that your neighbor probably ignores his most of the time.

Dog owners really need to measure themselves against the dog they get. For instance, I would really like to have a German Shepard, but I won't do that. Shepard's are great if you let them socialize with people. If you don't, they can be aggressive / extremely protective against people they do not know very well.

I have kids and don't take my dog around a lot of people very much so I got a Golden Retriever. They are perfect for kids and very docile. They love people and don't bark all the time. Very smart and easily trained. It took me less than 24 hours to train my dog to ring a bell when she wants to go outside. (A bell so if we are in a different room we can still hear it)

Being trainable doesn't make them smart.

No, I don't...and I'm not confused whatsoever. As a whole, Golden's are a very lovable, attractive, and trainable breed.....but "smart" is a stretch. As an owner of several Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Border Collies, Wiemaraners, Pitt mixes, Labs, and mutts.....and as part of an extended family that has had Airdales, Bulldogs, Setters, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Poodles (unfortunately), more Labs, and more Boxers...I feel confident in my opinion that Golden's aren't a particularly bright breed. I'd say without hesitation that they were in the bottom half of the breeds listed above....particularly the mutts. That doesn't mean I don't like them. They're wonderful dogs.

How so? Cognitive vs emotional recognition? Elephants and Chimps are known to be cognitively self-aware (ie, know they are looking at their self in a mirror) while there are aren't any dogs that have displayed themselves to be self-aware.

Dogs are trained, but it is a learned behavior. Some dogs are considered (by some) to be smarter dogs. Golden's are one in that group, as well as German Shepards, Border Collies, etc but that is because they tend to be much more obedience than some other breeds. They tend to be more subservient and willing to please and therefore put more effort into learning a behavior to please their master.

That doesn't mean they have the cognitive intelligence to extrapolate answers complex problems. As far as I know, no dog has shown that type of intelligence similar to say Bottlenose Dolphins, Chimps, Elephants and obviously Humans.

I have a Burnese Mountian Dog and a German sheppard and they are both intelligent. I also had a golden retriever and she was trainable, but not smart by any means.

I found the same to be true with my experience. I've had four Golden's, and while all of them were loyal, perhaps to a fault, they were by no means intelligent. Particularly compared to most of the mixed breed dogs I've owned...and the Border Collie.

There is a very obvious difference.
