not exactly hearing good news about James Marten's pass protection..come to think of it I'm not hearing much news about him at all if it isn't bad news.

Does anybody have a better assessment of Marten our rookie OL thus far?

The guy is a rookie - it would be nice to hear more positive things, but give him a little time. Most O-linemen need a little time to develop and get used to playing D-linemen who are often as quick as the college LB's they faced.

he was not expected to contribute this yr, for once lets not get all freaked out because mid round draft choices don't make impacts at week one of the preseason.

ok edited after you did, I see you are just asking..... I'm not going to get to worried about him at this point. Let's see how he is after a yr at this level.

I think that the biggest adjustment for any rookie at any position is learning the speed of the NFL. For OL, its even more so of an adjustment. I think he will be fine. He seems pretty solid in run blocking so it just learning the techniques to pass block and adjusting to the speed.

I know Babe Laufenberg said even before the Indy game that Free was his most impressive rookie, and Marten was his least impressive rookie.

Yeah, he might have a rough time for a while. He seems to lack quickness in his pass blocking. But if Free is what we think he is, he'll make up for it.

Rookie in his first week of preseason. If he was a first round guy that was supposed to be the "total" package and was struggling, I'd say you should keep an eye on it, but even that's going a little far. Give him a year, and if he's still having these problems then you've got something to be concerned about.

Marten played LG and LT in college.

Making a bit of a transition here.

I agree. Players develop at different rates. It is early in his career give him some time

it is a shame that he hasn't shown more but we aren't going to be starting him this year nor did we have any intentions on starting him or Free this year... lineman need 3 years on average... but I love the fact that we got some that are in training:)

Obviously it is too early for anybody to give up on the guy.

Generally coaches see good things in raw players who develop with additional time. So, yeah, it is mildly disappointing that Marten isn't getting any praise yet.

But it's early.

If we are hearing the same things about him at this time nxt year then we have a problem.

For now we just can't say how he will develop.

PArt of his problem may just be in the comparison to Free - he may be fine, but compared to Free he may just look like he is behind.

Actually Marten has gotten some praise for his run blocking but his pass blocking needs improvement and you can bet Sparano will have him working on it.

Same thing goes for Free but in reverse. His pass blocking is good (except with Ware) but his run blocking needs to be worked on. I'm really not worried about either because both are very hard workers & besides both will be spending this year developing their skills. Free is very athletic and has all the other talents (including good footwork) necessary to play LT in the NFL. Marten has more of an adjustment moving from LT to RT position so his development is slowed down. Both were expected to be only developmentals this season which is where Marten is at. Can't be helped that Free has looked good enough to actually start at LT against the Colts so his developmen is coming along much quicker despite now missing at least 2 weeks of preseason.

BTW: Free's development is the more important cause how far he progresses this season will determine what (if any) contract the Cowboys offer Flozel.

It has to be the curse of Erik Williams. Everyone who has worn the number 79 since has flopped. Charon Doresy, Jacob Rogers.... We just need to get him a new number.

I think Marten was drafted higher than Free because he played in a stronger college program and he showed the potential to play inside or out.

A few things to keep in mind here. First, the team wants to give him every chance to compete as an RT since that position is harder to fill than G. G may be his best position but he's getting a year to show he can play outside. Since he played a ton of G in college the adjustment back won't be too difficult if he has to go that way. Second, these BC guys like Columbo, Pete Kendall, Dan Koppen, and Chris Snee often are the kind of players who get by on being tough, strong, and good with technique - often they fit the "overachiever" category. They aren't going to impress reporters viewing practices.

Some rookies get drafted in the wrong round, I guess Free will make up for the Marten mistake... That being said I go into training camp expecting most rookies to develop slowly, he'll be okay next year.

Free got a stress fracture in their first game vs OSU.

Wore a boot for a month and barely practiced.

Also had a groin injury before their season began.

Battled through and kept playing.

The anti-Jacob Rogers.

Its stuff like this that makes me love our scouting department. Ireland, Sparano and Phillips apparently all went to check out Free ina private workout so they must have been high on him. Yet they played it smart and waitied to pick him and thus got two OT prospects that they liked.

Another example is picking Ware and getting Spears later in the round with Parcells lobbying for Spears at 11. Ireland and Co know what they are doing.

good assessment, but don't forget strength, most rookies struggle w/ that, they need 1-3 years in an NFL strength and conditioning program, esp. young linemen
