fo has the franchise tag.
tank has a legitimate shoulder injury that he can choose to fix or not fix any time he wants.

deadline for signing the franchise tag is in july.
he could sign the franchise tag and decide to have surgery in august because his shoulder feels worse after a practice.
if he has surgery in mid-august, he would be unable to play until at least mid november.

this is definitely a total-war event.
the question is if it is a credible threat during negotiations.
he could threaten to sign the tag and see how his shoulder feels in august during camp while cowboys would have to the 1 year tag price because it is guaranteed.

this threat could force cowboys to remove the tag?
if i were his agent, i would say:
1. you have april 1 to remove the tag
2. if not, we will sign it on april 1.
3. btw, in a totally unrelated matter, tank has decided not to do surgery for now. we will see how he feels in training camp, but we think he will be fine. DONT WORRY!

This isn't some genius plan without risk on tanks part

If he has an awful year in 19 and hits free agency next year..he will lose a lot of money..he's better off being at his best in 19 with or without a long term deal

Don't be surprised if this gets done before the start of free agency March 13. But you're right, his shoulder surgery is def a wild card he's now using as leverage. He could basically miss all training camp, sign the tag right before the start of the season and miss 8-10 games. Doubt they wanna pay him $20M for 6-8 games....pixxed off.
In fact, I'll stand by what I've said before, if this isn't done by the draft, he could well be traded.

yep, worse case for the Cowboys organization, best option for DLaw. Minimize his risk of a career ending injury. Then see what the market is willing to give for someone that puts up the same numbers as K. Mack in Chicago.

Austin Bryant,DE-Clemson
Anthony Nelson,DE-Iowa
Charles Omenihu,DE-Texas
Joe Jackson,DE-Miami

draft one of'm.

in f/a sign Vinny Curry,Dante Fowler or most likely...Benson Mayowa.

thats my "W.T.S.H.T.F." plan.

The Cowboys could end up paying Tank $20m to not play this year. While that would hurt the Cowboys, what does it do for Tank?

Well it gets him $20m but I think hurts him long term and in the short term. Teams are going to shy away from paying big bucks for a damaged player who goes to a nuclear option like that.

He has no more leverage than he would just holding out. It is in his own best interests to have the surgery.

At some point he is going to be behind the 8 ball. I don't think the league will let him refuse to have surgery he needs, draw pay from the team and circumvent the tag.

The Cowboys won't let it go that long. I would be shocked if they let that happen.

At some point though this will become personal for the Cowboys organization. Just like Laveon Bell last year, it hurt the Steelers some, but they didn't really miss him. Bell lost a ton of money that he will never see again.

He needs to stop jacking around and get it fixed. No deal until he gets it fixed. He doesn’t want the tag but isn’t making any friends by holding off on surgery.

Worst case scenario is we give him a lot of guaranteed money and he's done in two, forcing us to eat a lot of dead money against the cap.

I actually think he sits out! He played last year on the tag and made a ton of money. I would offer him market value right now or see what I could get for him in a trade.

If that's his plan then just trade him for picks before the draft. It's one thing to negotiate, it's another to deliberately make yourself unavailable by putting off repairing the injury some blame for his drop off after September.

He's not Mack and he's certainly not Donald. There's no logical reason to pay him like them.

Believe everyone is looking at this from the wrong point of view.

His agent probably will not agree to any contract until he sees what the market is bearing with Clowney, Flowers, and Ford. Once the market is set by one or all of those three then the negotiations will get serious. Still most of the so called experts believe Lawrence will get $80 in guarantees and in a 7 year deal. How much that means in terms of total contract $$ remains to be seen.

Worst case scenario for the Cowboys is that we overpay for him and he never lives up to the contract :(
Worst case scenario for me is that I spend too much time thinking about it:)
The worst case won't happen because Stephen is loathe to pay big guaranteed money to players. He can do long term back ended contracts that
doesn't have huge guaranteed money. Balls in Tank's court until draft day one.

This would be a disaster for Dallas. What team would pay us Tank’s value in a trade where the Cowboys have no leverage and knowing Tank is injured? The Cowboys FO has already misplayed this and it’s not even sure yet what their strategy is.
