I'm sure this is going to get buried in the avalanche of threads coming down the mountain tonight, but I had to write it.
Today was a terrible day.
I am a HUGE Cowboys fan -- let's get that out of the way now. But right now, the loss we just endured is secondary on my mind. Maybe I'm just numb I don't know.
But here's why.
When I was a freshman in college 9 years ago, I fell asleep at the wheel of my car driving late at night. My car hit a guardrail and spun into a pole. When I came I turned around to find my backseat smashed up into the back of the front seat, the key in the ignition wouldn't turn off, and my driver's side door was the only one that would open. Needless to say, it was totaled. My only injury was a small scratch on my forehead.
About a month ago, my car (the one I got after the totaled one and 500 miles short of 200k) broke down. So I've been looking for a car since then. Yesterday I found what I was looking for.
And I made a great deal on it. I was pumped.
I drove it home from DFW last night, admired it today, and got ready for the Cowboys game.
At 3:00 this afternoon I was taking my new ride over to my friends' house for the Cowboys watching party, in my Romo throwback. I was sitting at a stop light in the far right lane. The light turned green, and I noticed the car in the turn lane going into the intersection. I followed him out there. As I was halfway through the westbound lanes, I heard the screeching of brakes, looked to my left, and saw a westbound minivan careening through the intersection. In an split second it clipped the front of the guy in the turning lane, deflected off of him and T-boned me in the back drivers' side door.
My side curtain airbags in my new car deployed, and those, coupled with the fact that the brunt of the impact was a couple of feet behind me in the back seat, saved my life. I have some mild tightness and what feels like a minor burn from air bag chemicals on my neck, but I don't think there's a scratch on me.
I made it to the game 4 minutes into the first quarter. And yes, our beloved Cowboys lost. But no less than 5 minutes after Romo threw the interception in the end zone, my focus shifted to what really mattered. I was still alive and I was uninjured.
I know it's tough for all of us right now. But each of you should be thankful that in the end, this is a game, this is entertainment, and you're alive.
Life is good. We'll cheer them on again next year.
