Losing someone you love is always rough. I lost my dad a few months ago and it was extremely hard. I still think about it all the time.

And yeah, realizing you just screwed up real bad is always a kick in the gonads.

Phone ringing at 3 am when you're older than 30. It's never good news.

Or when your kids are out with friends, .. or at college.

Or when your parents are 86 yrs old, .. and your father-in-law is 85 and lives alone.

3 am is never good.

Among many things I can think off this comes to mind....
Having to make the decision to put down a beloved family aka family pet.

Watching my little sister (who I am supposed to protect), slowly die from brain cancer and there was not a damn thing I could do about it.

2nd only to how kids must feel when they're aware they're fighting losing battles with say a blood malignancy like a chronic leukemia is when you see them everyday and realise they're not responding to treatment.

Having a 6 year old tell you he's being sexually abused by his father. Anything involving children being a victim.

I'm sure your story is more dramatic than mine, but about a year and a half ago, I took the family to a condo at the beach. We rented a place on the third floor. There was a patio outside the door and as I was unloading the car, I look over and my son (2.5 at the time) was leaning between the spindles looking down, and it was only then when I noticed that they were ridiculously far apart. Like 18 inches, very easy for a child to fall through. I about had a heart attack and ran and grabbed him. It still makes my stomach turn thinking about that situation, and what could have happened.

The bright side is that "near misses" like this make me very cautious and aware of things moving forward.
