Worst QB in Cowboys history?

In yet another effort to alleviate the boredom of the offseason I thought I would see who everyone thought was the worst QB in Cowboys history.

Some criteria to begin with:

1. Only those QBs who have started at least 3 games for the Cowboys.

2. Only those QBs with a career passer rating below 80.0.

3. No going outside those two criteria.

The stats given are career averages/percentages but only for their time with the Cowboys.

OK, so here are the contenders (in order of pass attempts):

Name ------------ Win% --- Comp% -- TD% -- INT% -- Avg -- Rating
Craig Morton ----- 69.15 ---- 52.4 ---- 6.1 ---- 5.6 ---- 7.9 --- 75.6
Steve Pelluer ---- 29.63 ---- 56.4 ---- 3.0 ---- 4.1 ---- 7.1 --- 71.7
Quincy Carter ---- 51.61 ---- 56.2 ---- 3.2 ---- 4.0 ---- 6.5 --- 70.0
Eddie LeBaron ---- 17.31 ---- 51.9 ---- 6.5 ---- 7.7 ---- 7.7 --- 67.2
Gary Hogeboom -- 50.00 ---- 53.9 ---- 2.5 ---- 4.4 ---- 6.9 --- 65.4
Vinny Testeverde - 33.33 ---- 60.0 ---- 3.4 ---- 4.0 ---- 7.1 --- 76.4
Chad Hutchinson - 22.22 ---- 50.8 ---- 2.8 ---- 3.2 ---- 6.2 --- 66.3
Steve Walsh ----- 20.00 ---- 50.0 ---- 2.2 ---- 3.9 ---- 6.2 --- 60.4
Steve Beuerlein - 100.00 ---- 51.6 ---- 3.2 ---- 1.9 ---- 6.8 --- 76.3
Anthony Wright -- 20.00 ---- 46.4 ---- 3.3 ---- 5.3 ---- 5.1 --- 50.8
Kevin Sweeney --- 50.00 ---- 44.3 ---- 6.6 ---- 5.7 ---- 5.7 --- 61.2
Brad Johnson ----- 33.33 ---- 53.9 ---- 2.2 ---- 5.6 ---- 5.7 --- 54.8
Ryan Leaf -------- 00.00 ---- 51.1 ---- 1.1 ---- 3.4 ---- 5.6 --- 57.7
Jerry Rhome ------ 33.33 ---- 52.0 ---- 1.3 ---- 4.0 ---- 6.6 --- 60.7
John Roach ------- 00.00 ---- 47.1 ---- 1.5 ---- 8.8 ---- 5.1 --- 30.8

Most of you are way too young to remember guys like John Roach but I do and I hated that guy for a long time for being such a lame player. We had a good chance to make the playoffs in 1964 but he lost all 4 of his starts and killed any chance we might have had.

Most of you are old enough to remember Ryan Leaf and how badly he sucked! He threw all of 1 TD in 88 pass attempts! Thankfully, he only started 3 games for us.

Kevin Sweeney was a replacement player during the 1987 strike but made the roster and was still around the following season.

Some of these guys were on bad teams or in bad situations, like LeBaron, Pelluer, & Walsh. Some were on very good teams, like Beuerlein or Morton, and didn't put up great stats, but they won.

IMO John Roach was the worst QB to ever wear the Star followed closely by Ryan Leaf. I give Roach the nod because he played on a better team than Leaf did and also because he just sucked royally!

Who gets your vote?

In case anyone noticed, I did not include Don Meredith even though his career passer rating is below 80.0. He couldn't possibly be considered so I left him off the list.

You really believe Carter was worse than Leaf? Or Hutchinson?

Of the players I have had the "pleasure" of watching Chad Hutchinson was the one I couldn't believe had been given the honor of wearing a Cowboys uniform.

It seems like talent and ability in large quantities would be a requirement to even set foot in Valley Ranch, yet Hutchinson was mysteriously void of either.

He absolutely was worse. Leaf and Hutchinson hardly saw the field. Carter had a legit shot and started alot of games.

He was dreadful. His time at QB was a huge black eye for our franchise, on and off the field.

I do from the perspective his time with the team was the absolute worst. He gave me zero hope of ever being good and moving the team forward. In addition JJ and Campo were willing to stay the course with him which added to the total despair I felt with him leading the team.

Isaiah Stanback, lol.

Maybe because it's so recent, but Brad Johnson in three games kind of erased all the bad memories I had of like a Hogeboom or an Anthony Wright.

He just looked so out of place.

I'd say Leaf, simply because it's embarrassing that we ever even signed him.

The guy was a wretch.

OK, that makes sense. I was thinking that it might also be because we took him in the 2nd round, much higher than he should have gone. Just one more mark against him.

I had to endure the scorn of my family and friends when we signed Leaf. Yet one more thing I'll never forgive Jerry for. :whip:

Brad Johnson ranks high on my list as well because we had so much for him to work with and he completely sucked! Same for Hogeboom, that was a very good team he was on and he couldn't do anything with it.

To be fair to Johnson, I don't blame him as much as I do Jerry for signing him in the first place after everyone in the entire world KNEW he was washed up after his last season in Minnesota. :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:

I know he doesn't fit the criteria but Babe Laufenberg was the worst QB I've ever seen in a Cowboy's uniform.

I've gotta go with Hogeboom just because of the expectations and how Landry kept jerking Danny White around for that All-Preseason Hall of Famer.

I blame the Cowboys brass for suiting up Leaf in the first place, so I don't blame him for stinking up the Dallas uniform.

I wanted to put him in so badly! He had 1 TD and 6 INTs in 1990 and ended up with a 16.9 passer rating!

Technically, we can blame the fans for Hogeboom starting since it was partly due to a poll that was taken. That said, he still sucked!

When Pearlman was putting together "Boys Will be Boys", he interviewed Steve Walsh. I can't remember how it came up (I believe Pearlman asked the question), but Steve Walsh said that Dallas would probably have won just as many Superbowls with him as QB over Aikman.

That sheer foolishness almost made me lump him in with Hogeboom.

Hutchinson easily.

He had no business being on the field. Even more so than Leaf.
