Would anyone go for this?

O.K,...Heres the deal. Lots of talk about trading a r.b lately, would love to keep Choice but I believe if a r.b were to be traded it would be him due to Barbers impact on the salary cap.

Ive heard it kicked around that the Patriots are down on Maroney, possibly looking for a R.B. Patriots drafted Patrick Chung last year, safety with upside who is now backing up Brandon Meriweather.

My proposition is a straight up trade .....Choice for Meriweather. Think he would fit the bill at safety giving us a pretty good playmaker back there for years to come. Not so sure the Pats would go for this though, much of it is based on Choice's potential rather than actual production. I do know that Tashard is regarded fairly high around the league though.

I would then burn a fourth round pick or so for another young runningback to hedge our bets against injury to Jones or Barber.

Little bit of a debbie downer here but...

Whether anyone would like the trade or not...chances are it is not going to happen.

The patriots would either draft another RB or get a FA rather than trade a player. And I don't think the cowboys would trade choice for chung anyway unless they were realllllly high on chung to start with...otherwise they might just take their chances on getting E.Thomas in the first or trade down and get Nate Allen or one of the other safeties in the draft.

Just to play devil's advocate, from the Pats' perspective, isn't it easier to pick up a quality RB vs. a quality Safety?

A team could probably pick up a good, serviceable RB in Rounds 3-5. I'd think it is generally more difficult to pick up a starting quality safety.

But yhea, I'd do the trade you'd suggest - even though I like Choice a lot - simply because of what you said - we could easily get another RB in the later rounds as insurance.

I doubt the Patriots would trade their pro bowl safety for a backup running back. Would I do it, though? I'd seriously consider it.

I just feel like we are so close. Like we need to make a move that will pay dividends right away in 2010 without impacting our ability to draft for the future though . Believe me...Im a DRAFT guy all the way. Do not like parting with draft picks at all if possible. Thing is, I see NOBODY in this draft that will make much of an impact on next season that we REALISTICALLY have a chance to draft.

Even if we were to draft the big Guard from Idaho, Iupati, is he going to supplant Kosier or Davis next season? Nope...not a chance.

Free agency is pretty much blown out of the water for this season too, so that leaves us to consider trade scenario's imo.

Long as im on the subject, Ive got us going Iupati in round one and Jordan Shipley with our second pick. Possibly in a trade down to the top of round 3 if lucky.

Even though the Pats would never do it sure, I'd be on board for that move.

I see what you're saying, but respect to Iupati, I could see a realistic scenario (not including injury) where he could supplant Kosier around the last quarter of the season.

Now, is that enough to get us over the hump? I don't know.

The two things that could help us most for this season in terms of players is a reliable FG kicker and a kick returner, IMO.

Upgrading those two positions can upgrade the team asap, and we can get those positions on the roster via FA and somewhere in the draft (not necessarily even the first 2-3 rounds but later on).

first...what salary cap? with only 6 picks and so many needs, I would hate to create another need. but I understand your logic, where we do need to upgrade at saftey position. is merriweather an upgrade over hamlin? what do we do with hamlin?

First, since we are going into an uncapped year, Barber's salary will have no bearing on what we should or should not do.

Second, I like the Merriweather idea although really don't think that NE would go for it. Now a trade of Barber for Cromartie in SD and move Newman to FS would be fine with me. Gives us more speed in backfield, better coverage, a better DB overall.

Third, it will be interesting to see how this uncapped off season plays out but my guess is Jerry is going to load up on draft picks from teams that want to go cheap this year.

The Cowboys took Merriweather off their Draft board when he was coming out.

Good OP. We're good enough to win it all as it is if we're lucky enough to stay as healthy as we were last year. The biggest thing we need is home field advantage and some luck with the playoff draw. No rookie is going to replace Kosier this year, but Kosier's not really the problem with the OL, anyway. We just need to sit tight, draft smart, maybe make one or two judicious signings in FA, fix our kicking and KR problems, and play our hand.

But I like the fact that you're thinking creatively and that the scenario is realistic. Another wrinkle: Belichick was very high on Barber back in 2007. I'm not on the trade-a-productive-player bandwagon, but he might even be better bait than Choice in this scenario.

Really? You must have deep inside sources. I have never heard of that.

I would love Meriweather on the team, but not for Choice. Choice has the potential to be an every down back, he has the power of Barber and the speed of Jones. He should be our starter.

Actually I think I do remember hearing something about that. Im just counting on the fact that he has cleaned up his act now.

No sources. That was reported by the media outlets.

Everybody was high on Barber in '07.

I think most of us have come down by now.
