If Carolina didn't take Thompson would Dallas have taken him over B. Jones?

Bill Jones thinks so

Anyone hear anything on this?

@CBS11BillJones: Peter King: Carolina "over-drafted Shaq Thompson at 25...would have been there 10 or more picks later.">Shaq wasn't getting past 27

I think he's wrong. They did have interest in Thompson - reported after the pick. And he's likely just jumping to conclusions. If he's right, Broaddus, Mickey, and Eatman will likely put it out there on their shows this week.

Not sure. But from listening to the draft show, he was definitely one of the guys they were targeting along with Jones. We'll probably never get that answer.

Maybe but I'm glad it fell that way. Shaq Thompson could be great, but he's even more boom or bust than Byron in my opinion.

I have a slight concern that he reminds me a tad of Ernie Sims.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I like Thompson, but it worked out for the best if true. That would have definitely eliminated Gregory from the equation since it is clear to me at least, they had to come out of the draft with a CB high.

I don't think so, they were not broken up over it when Carolina picked Thompson.

There did not seem to be much of a tense reaction to anyone's picks from what I saw.

Big difference from Jerry Jones practically throwing his head down on the table when the Patriots took Willie McGinest years ago. They showed the footage on A Caught In The Draft show last week. He looked like he had been shot.

It's funny that a lot of people were upset about taking a LB in the 4th round, but LB (Kendricks, McKinney, Thompson) was very much in consideration at 27.

The bigger difference was that all three of those players could be strong candidates for nickel duty or even pass rushing specialist.

Wilson is a solid player but is he more? Looks like Hitchens, already have one of those.

They were already celebrating in the war room before the Shaq pick was made. I thought it was odd because there were still two more picks to be turned in and they already knew who they were picking.

I think he can compete with Hitchens for one of those spots. If healthy, Lee has one of the spots. I think Wilson would be a better candidate than any of the FA signings.

Someone said ESPN and NFL Network were on tape delay and that they were about 5 picks behind from what was really going on.

Possibly, but you could see them talking on the phone to somebody. I was guessing the two teams in front of them. They started giving high fives and celebrating and two more picks went in. When Dallas went on the clock Jerry picked up the phone, then Garret and then Rod. It's possible that they were sure one of there guys was going to be there, but they knew it a full two picks in advance. Unless Broaddus and the radio crew were duped too. I was watching Dallascowboys.com and NFL network on TV. The TV was only a few seconds ahead. Can't be for sure though, but that is the way I recollect it.

Apparently there were 3 players with 10 picks of 27 that they liked, Jones, Dupree and Shaq. I don't think anybody really know which order they had them in on their board.

Garrett made a statement on the phone call that they were sweating it out for 4 or 5 picks hoping for Jones.

Could be. I was on the chat on this site and Woody's girl was saying she saw on Twitter I think about 3 picks were made before the TV showed them

Not could be. Definitely

The broadcast was at least 3 picks behind...I heard the public announcer at the venue through my TV speakers in the background say the Cowboys are on the clock before the panthers pick was announced...

From the phone call with Jones, Marinelli told him they were on pins and needles the last 5 picks before 27 hoping he fell. I think he was the target and Shaq may have been the fallback pick.

The celebration may have been that Carolina was not going to pick Gregory.

If the Cowboys had three linebackers in mind (Shaq, Kendrick and McKinney) and saw that Gregory were falling, they could have indeed shifted their focus to Jones, knowing that nobody was going to take Gregory behind them.

As it turns out, the Cowboys addressed the need for a corner/free safety and a pass rusher in their first two picks.

They're probably glad they didn't pick Gregory @ 27 because they would have gotten the pass rusher but not a top corner. They have both now. :)
