Would Marcus Spears be a good NT?

burmafrd...I agree with you, I think Hatcher will put Spears on the bench before too long.

Not that I'm advocating it, but Peter Boulware was great in a similar role in Baltimore before injuries ended his career.

The Ravens ran a 3-4 during that time.

Spears has the talent to play anything on the line, but I don't think he has the mental toughness and tenacity you need to play NT.

He's lazy - he was lazy at LSU and once a lazy slob gets a wallet fulla bread, it's over. Spears won't amount to a pile of hay if ya know what I mean. He doesn't have the "football player attitude". He is so average it's not funny.

I really hope he has a good game Sunday...

I really do too David. I hope I'm wrong about the slob...............(but I know I'm not).

No, he made a name for himself under Marvin Lewis. He was a 4-3 OLB, but played DE on passing situations.

He was already a pretty good OLB before Marvin.

Or maybe my brain is just totally FUBAR right now. I've been awake for 30 straight hours now.

He's been crying and moaning incessantly all offseason about how he was asked to play "head up" on offensive linemen under Parcells, and you think he's going to play a 0 tech?

By the end of september Hatcher will be starting unless somehow Spears shows signs of life. And no way is he tough enough for more then a few plays at NT.

Don't you have to be a lot bigger than 300 lbs. to be able to handle NT? Ferguson is 315, SD's Jamal Williams is 348, Vince Wilfork and Casey Hampton are both 325, etc.

It sure helps, based on the size of the slobs they need to break down. We could fatten him up with a chicken wing diet.

IMO, increased weight did not help Spears improve his skills at defensive end. So, my question is, "Would it help him to gain a lot of weight to play nose tackle?"

I don't believe so. His best chances of producing at a high level at any position is to do so at defensive end at a lower weight than last season. If he can't succeed now and at defensive end, I doubt that he ever will at nose tackle.

Spears and Canty need to step up this year or be replaced. I'd like to see how Spears does at RDE as well. I don't think I've seen him play that position yet.

As for him playing NT....no chance.

Canty did step up down the stretch last year -- AND he doesn't keep making excuses for poor play.

What difference would it make to put Spears at RE? He was a LE in college so it's not like he had to learn a new side in the NFL.
