John Wier, Coppell, Texas: Does the assistant head coach title in San Francisco prevent the Cowboys from hiring Mike Singletary as defensive coordinator?
Mickey: Technically, since the 49ers' assistant head coach/linebackers coach is under contract, it certainly could. Teams can't prevent assistant coaches from interviewing for a head coaching job, but they would have to give Singletary permission to break his contract to take even a defensive coordinator's spot. Just like the Dolphins did Jason Garrett and the Cowboys a favor allowing him to be hired as an offensive assistant since he still was under contract to be the team's quarterback coach one more year. But you are thinking along the right lines, although Singletary has only coached four seasons, half as many as Todd Bowles, who's considered the leading candidate to become the defensive coordinator.
