Would this be a useful stat

29 vs Philly was not bad. But seeing that the Cowboys had 45 minutes of possession practically unheard of is 29 really that good.

Could we use a ration of Time of Posession/Points Scored how the Cowboys fared.

29 points/45 minutes = 0.64 points/minute of posession for 1 game

How would other teams fare.

Could we calculate this stat for the season so far ? and compare all teams ?

It’s unnecessary and would never really be useful because you can have a 14 play 10 minute drive that results in a FG or no points and then have a 1 play 9 second TD Drive. The better stat is the one Jimmy Johnson used to talk about. A team should have 7 points for every 100 yards of offense. Going by that, Dallas is leaving large numbers of points on the field especially against philly. They should have had 35 points in regulation but only managed 23.

Anyone that watched the game knows very well that the offense was garbage for 3 quarters..
I wouldn’t say they were garbage. It was more of a case of being ineffective in the red zone. Field goals kept them close and then the penalty’s and turnovers gave Philadelphia life.

Points per possession.

Time of possession per drive.

Those are the stats that matter.

Ideally you want high time of per possession.
This coaching staff (and most of them for last 50 years) have believed a long, time-consuming drive that ends in 3 is better than a quick strike 7.
Dictate pace, wear other team down and control who has ball last each half.

It's ugly but it is uber-effective when you win the 3rd down battle.

The offense putting up all those yards and eating all that clock was why they rolled Philly in Q4 and OT.
The offense was good on 3rd down all night and piled up 32 first downs.
Stupid mistakes and poor red zone play made it ugly but the offense was effective.
DAL punted only twice all night. That's an effective offense.

This game was not all that unlike Jimmy's early teams.
They wore down the defense and won by being far superior at the end of the game.

The offense moved the ball very well, till they got to the red zone or turned it over
It really wasn’t about the offense not working but about turnovers and FG

I'd say we moved the ball well but turned it over, committed too many penalties and kicked too many field goals in the red zone. Highly inefficient and not good enough, but I wouldn't say the offense was "garbage."

We have to fix the red zone
Most of the penalties are probably about injuries
Too many guys banged up and getting beat
All QB throw ints but you have to limit the mistakes ones because some are gonna be great defensive plays, and got to stop the fumbles
We moved the ball anazingly if you look at it. 10-19 on 3rd down makes it almost impossible for a team to beat you, if you don’t beat yourself

There are lies, damned lies and statistics.... Mark Twain ;)

Always always always use points per possession

Using points per time of possesssion wouldnt give you any more clear of a picture because teams vary on game speed. For example we play a slow tempo offense that usually snaps the ball near the game clock expiration. Thats by design, not by effectivenes of the offense.

The more the QB throws, the greater the chance of an int. Hey, throw the ball zero times and get intercepted zero times. Throw 54 times and 1 or 2 may get picked off. Law of averages

That’s very true
The fumbles bug me more than ints
The int in the end zone could have been deeper but that was a very good defensive play
The over throw was a bad throw
Out of 54 passes there are gonna be bad ones

Yep, me too @ fumbles. Ball security man!! I looked up Aikman's stats for fumbles. You know who fumbled as much or more than Dak? Troy and he's a HOF'er. Fact: in Aikman's first 3 years he had 13 fumbles. 47 in his career

Actually it wasn't garbage. They moved the ball.
Finishing the drive for a TD was garbage.

Dak throws end zone pick, lost 3 or 7 points there.
Missed FG, lost another 3 points
1st and goal, get FG, lost 4 points.
