Over the past few days, I've been trying to figure out how a 3TE set would work. From what I hear, Phillips is a great blocking TE. Could we run a counter out of this set? I'd like some expert opinions, I know Hos is good at this stuff. How would it work?I'm not good at figuring out the LB/S responsibilities, so I don't know what would happen. Just a thought. His speed deserves to be in the open field, so weakside counter is dangerous.

3-4 - Felix Jones (28) counter Leonard Davis pulling

Please show me flaws, advice, etc. Thanks. Yes, 2 people would be 1 step behind the LOS.

I like the idea, to be honest. And I like the way you were able to construct a diagram of the play using a message board.

 Good job!

It could work, and has worked before. The only thing with your formations is that, while legal for a run play, you would need 2 more players to align off of the LOS. In this case it would most likely be RW11 and Martellus. If you really want to mess with a defense you could align Witten and Bennett off the LOS, leave RW11 on, and then motion Witt or Bennett across the formation.

In my offense, we would call this 13 Personnel (1 Back, 3 TEs) and the formation here would be Robo (If it were to the left it would be Lobo).

Toss sweep and Play-Action is GREAT out of 13 Personnel, especially with great atheltes at TE.

See. We could mix in play action with it. God it would drive DC's nuts.

Who's #89

John Phillips, TE out of Virginia.

Positives: Prototype height for the position with long limbs. Solid build with room for additional growth. Reads the defense and can find the soft spot in the short and medium levels of zone coverage. Reliable hands. Catches the ball cleanly with his hands and secures it quickly. Good body control to catch the pass outside of his frame. Lacks the quickness off the snap that teams prefer, but accelerates smoothly. Physical inline blocker. At least adequate quickness off the snap and laterally for the down block. Provides a good initial pop and effort as a drive blocker. Veteran with four years of starting experience.

We get a lot of players from Virginia, eh?

The Commanders under Gibbs in the 80's used some 3 TE sets in the base offense. I believe they called it "heavy jumbo"..."jumbo" was 2 TE sets

The Pats have done this by declaring an extra OT a TE and running and using PA out of the formation. They actually used it with great success.

I like the idea of having Columbo move outside left and having Witten and MB line up off guard right.

I think a Jumbo was one OL as a TE (plus a reg TE) and Heavy Jumbo was at least 2 OL lined up as TE.

I telling you Garret needs to break out the Power I either formation the old fashion smash it or pass from it :D

Everyone would freak fans, refs, coaches of other team haha

Choice Felix Barber in the back field bennet and witten at te you could run or pass from it with those guys

I love to see it as the new gimmick to replace the wildcat

Don Warren and Clint Didier were the TE's out there most of the time, I think one of them (Didier I believe) became one of the first (if not the first) player dubbed an "H-Back". They played almost exclusively from 1 back sets during the 80's.

I dont ever remember them using OL's as the extra TE's in the regular offense, but it was a long time ago.

Just checked w/a friend of mine who coaches, "Jumbo" is 2 TEs, 1 FB, 1 HB. "Heavy Jumbo" has 3 TEs, one of which is an OL (or a LB like the Pats used Vrabel).

Normally you would use up to 3 TE set in short yardage situations. Once the defense sees 3 TE they will be sitting with 9 in the box looking run.
