Would you have chosen this guy over Julius and Steven?

Lions attend Jones workout
June 28, 2008 10:13 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert

Former Detroit Lions tailback Kevin Jones held a workout Saturday, and - surprise, surprise -- the Lions were among four teams to attend.

In January, Jones underwent surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. It's not clear whether Jones will be ready to play in time for the regular season, but he has said he will be ready for non-contact drills this summer.

The Lions released him in March but were interested enough to send a pro scout to the workout, which was held about 45 minutes outside of Detroit.

According to this Associated Press report, Jones ran and performed shuttle drills in front of officials from the Lions, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins.

Running back-needy teams must ask whether there is enough of a market for Jones - and demand for tailbacks - to justify signing Jones before he is fully recovered. Saturday's workout was mostly about giving teams a progress report on his recovery.
---------------------------------

I think I remember wanting him over both Julius and Steven Jackson because of the wiggle he has and his speed.

But he has never been able to stay healthy.

Only four team showing up to take a 'look see' at this guy shows you that teams do think capable RB's grow on trees.

No to Kevin or Julius Jones.

I still remember not taking Steven Jackson, and I was shocked when they passed and then selected Julius later in the draft. It was one of the ******** moments management has had over the years.

BP beleived there was very little difference between the top 4 backs and actually liked Kevin Jones the best. There actually was VERY little chance he was ever going for a RB in the first no matter what. Jerrah was sitting this one out from all appearences. Lets face it- Jackson has had one great year and that is it. None of the other backs have done much. It was just a poor year for RBs.

There is no question about Jackson's ability or talent. Injuries have limited him somewhat is all. He is a dominant RB. Sure wish he was on our roster.

Not over Jackson. I was so high on Jackson it wasn't funny. I couldn't believe we traded down. I would have too given what we got, but I was stunned at the time.

I'd rather have Ware than Jackson

The pick we got back ended up being Spears, not Ware.

Parcells said he wanted Spears and if we only had one pick he would have taken Spears or that's how I remembered hearing it.

I liked Julius Jones. He gained over 1000 yards with a much weaker offensive line than we had this past year, but was simply phased out of our offense.

I liked the speed he possessed, and I think the play calling hurt his averages as much as anything- especially the first play handoff in every game that everyone knew was coming.

I do think he changed his running style out of fear of Bill Parcells- which led him to commit to a hole in the line whether it was there or not. It paid off big when the hole was opened, but he was stopped for no gain when it wasn't.

Parcells seemed content to do that through the first half of the game, and then would let Barber run around more in the second half, knowing the defense was tired, and Marion had the fresh legs.

But, I don't think Julius was a bust. I do, however think the Cowboys made the right move by taking Felix Jones, and letting Julius move on. Running backs are a dime a dozen- and with Jones now 4 years into his career, he probably has only about 4-5 good years left.

The sky is still the limit for Felix.

Did you forget what we got the next draft due to that trade?

If BP didn't get Ware and the Cowboys didn't get incredibly lucky with Romo, I a lot of people would be calling Parcells time with the team unsuccessful.

I agree. Also, wasn't it Sean Payton that really pushed for Romo to sign with Dallas as an undrafted free agent? I think we owe that one to Payton, and to Jerry for releasing Quincy Carter so Romo made the team in 2004. ;)

it will be better for you and all of us if we just come to realization and admit the truth:

Julius Jones started out good, and just lost it. He was (oh god,do I dare say it) a BUST !

I would only call him a bust if he plays dreadful in Seattle, sure the majority of his time is Dallas was lackluster, but if it wasn't for MB3's unique talents Jones would of been the starter up until his contract ran out. He might never set the league alight, but he should still be playing for a few more years.

but if we draft Jackson, we probably have a better record than 6-10 and don't draft Ware and never draft Barber.
