Would you have signed Marcus Spears for 2 year 3.55 million?

You might be thinking WHAT? I like Spears but no way is a one dimensional DT with 2 bad knees worth that!

If that's what you're thinking, you're right!

And if you're in the crowd who is upset that Dallas is not even a modest player in free agency, just remember that Spears is in that "modest signing" class for the Ravens.

So put aside your worry and thank your lucky Stars that we didn't spend modestly on some other team's Marcus Spears.

No.

Last two seasons per PFF...

Spears was ranked the 25th best 3-4 DE out of 34 in 2012 and the 25th best out of 32 in 2011.

Is that even worth the vet minimum?

I want to move on from Spears as well but it has nothing to do with nonsense from a garbage website like that.

Good point. And the fact that the Cowboys are switching to the 4-3, means there really wasn't a fit for Spears.

Yeah, if there's one thing the Rabens have proven it's that they like to spend their money frivolously and can't evaluate defensive talent.

Spears may not have fit here, but this happens every time someone leaves. Board spends far too much energy trying to rationalize how much that player sucked, always sucked and will always suck.

That's a valid point.

But to label every move the Raven's have made as being "golden" isn't rational either.

Spears was an OK player at one time... Less than OK the last two years.

Would I? No way.
Would GM Jerry Jones? Apparently not.
Would GM Ozzie Newsome? Apparently so.

And if Jerry Jones were to do so, he would have been ridiculed by the media and fans. Apparently, Ozzie gets a pass on this one. Although, what I'm seeing (and hearing from Ravens fans here in the outskirts of Balt) from the Ravens lately sounds a lot like 'Crazy Train."

That's not even what the OP was about.

I never said Spears sucked for us. In fact he gave Dallas great value. But moving forward he does not hold the same value, and is clearly not worth what the Ravens HAD to pay him.

The word HAD is the point of the OP. And it's not about Spears, really. I jsut used him as the example of how you HAVE to way-overpay in free agency to get a player you want.

And I did that because this place is in an uproar that we're not playing in free agency, when really it's a good thing for our current cap that we're not reaching for other teams' version of a vet player like Spears, who will never live up to the contract he will get as a free agent signing.

I'm glad spears is gone and I'm glad we haven't done anything in free agency. We have alot of talented players on both offense and defense. This draft can really take us to a new level with the right coaching....

Jones would have been ridiculed for signing a vet defensive lineman to a 2 year 3.5m deal? You really believe that?

The heat the Raven's are catching right now is for all the pieces they're losing. As a fan of a superbowl winning team, you'd be just as anxious about losing as many starters as they have.

3.5m over 2 years is not overpaying for a veteran lineman. We signed Igor Olshansky to a 4 year 18m deal all the way back in 2009 and waived him two years later. If we needed a vet backup or rotational guy to play the run, we could do a lot worse than paying 1.75m a year to a veteran that just turned 30. That's chump change.

I agree but we need to get younger on the DL. As we stand today we really don't have a single player, other than maybe Tyrone Crawford, who you could consider to be an ascending starter for the future.

We keep steadily trimming away the old guard and I very much like that.
Since the beginning of 2010 , 39 players are gone and more than half the starters.
I appreciate his professional attitude, but he was older and there's room to improve there..and get younger.

I believe it is worth noting that several NFL folks have criticized PFF's ratings because they do not rely on the ALL-22 film for grading.

What I find even more astounding is their claim that several NFL offices are subscribers to their data.

I will conclude that they are a good resource for the raw collection of data though. They've certainly improved those features and some of that comes in handy more than a handful of times.

Back to the Spears topic though, it was time to move on from him. An outstanding guy for the media but a terrible contribution to the field for the team.

I agree with you but that is not the point the usual suspects are trying to make

They are trying to say that Jerry made a great decision and Ozzie made a bad one

Ergo ......

If I was the defending SB champ, I would. Not if I'm the Cowboys.
