Peter King mentioned in an article referenced by BloggingTheBoys.com that Goodell has considered moving the trade deadline back by a considerable amount.

The argument is that in week 6 only one or two teams are out of the running for the playoffs and have no real incentive to kick a contributor on their team to another for considerations in April of the following year. Baseball's trade deadline happens at around the 2/3rds mark of the season, or week 11ish in terms of the NFL season.

What could have Denver finagled for Orton if he could still have been dealt? What players on teams out of the running could a real contender pick up to help their cause in the stretch run into the playoffs? Would you be willing to part with a 5th round pick for a full back at this point if Fiametta wasn't able to make it back? Same 5th for a 4th CB to replace Ball?

There's no doubt that a lot of fans here could figure out a player or two they'd like to see wearing the uniform for Dallas for the cost of a late round pick that could not only help us the remainder of this season, but also be a contributor for additional seasons.

Thoughts?

I have no problem of moving the trading deadline back, but no further than week ten at the latest, but there's a bigger problem, it's the salary cap and until the league/players union finds a way to adjust the salary transfer of a players contract that's up against the cap, there really isn't going to be a lot of trades anyway..

How many teams are in salary cap trouble right now? Dallas has 18.6 million and some change to spend if it so wanted to, and we have additional player contracts we could renegotiate if they were agreeable.

You can always rework a contract for a player you trade for, if they're smart enough to take money up front to ease their cap hit.

I wouldn't mind seeing it moved back to the week after Thanksgiving even though it would tough getting the player up to speed.

Week nine of the season is where I think it ought to be. The midway point of the season when the bye week is considered. Week six is just too early to make sense.

Sounds like most on here have no problem moving tradeline back a bit. 6th week is much too early & maybe Thanksgiving is bit too late-- so I'm leaning toward 2nd/3rd weekend in November. Teams have more injuried players & it could help out the contenders while those losing might be able get back into the race even this late in the season.

That's the big issue right there, isn't it? Some players catch on faster than others, and some positions are easier to assimilate than others.

I wouldn't mind a bit giving up a conditional 6th for a punt/kickoff returner right about now. That said, I'm very much in love with "free" yardage that can be gained on special teams. A big return can set the momentum back into your favor, and a KO return TD can kill whatever momentum the other team has at that point.

Dallas has 20 plus million in dead money against their cap next year...its teams that are trading that has to eat the pro rated bonus left on the length of the contact of the player they're trading, and his salary for that year counts against their cap....that's what has to change, why do you think they're isn't alot of trades in Football at the trading deadline.

The NFL and player union have to come up with an agreement to make it easier to make trades, otherwise it won't make much of a differene if you move the trading deadline back

Week 9 or 10 is where it belongs. There would be a lot more trades.

I'd support it. Having it in Week 6, some teams don't even have needs at that time.

Move it back to Week 10, 11, or 12.

Yes. Definitely.

I'm for anything that would create more trading in the NFL. I'd love a real trade deadline day that always brings player movement throughout the league. That would be exciting.

Is this in response to all the QB injuries we've seen lately? Seems convenient to be coming up now.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving it back a couple of weeks, but most leagues have it right after the halfway point in the season. So Week 9 or Week 10 at the latest.

Agreed.

I think it's high time that they moved it.

I never liked having it so early in the season.

If it were up to me, I'd move it to week 12 to give playoff contenders the opportunity to make moves and the teams that are out of it the ability to gain additional resources for next year.

It definitely should be moved back. I really thought that would be part of the new CBA.

no. Madden fans trade their dog players too much as it is.

I wouldn't mind them moving it. Doesn't bother me at all and I think it would add even more potential excitement toward the end of a season.

move it to week 14 which in reality is still three weeks from the end of the season with the bye included.
