Would you use a 2nd or 3rd on a QB?

If one of the top prospects was to fall that far down?
Might sound crazy, but if we're talking strictly value, you grab an OT in the first, and if someone like Andy Dalton or Christian Ponder is available, maybe pick them up.
Thoughts?

I'd be happy with Ponder in the 2nd, not so sure on Dalton.

In the third round, I can't think of a QB I'd be interested in.

I actually like Dalton Better but I would not take either in the second and not so sure I would take a QB in the third either.

I'd pass this year and give McGee another year to develop.

Wouldn't take much to swing me on Dalton.

I like Dalton. The kid is smart, hard worker, accurate, doesn't make many stupid mistakes, a proven leader, and the kid wants to win.

He he isn't a prototypical NFL QB, but I think he can be one. Give him a couple of years to learn the NFL game and I think he could turn out to be a quality starting QB. I wouldn't think twice about having him instead of McGee as the Cowboys 3rd QB.

The problem I have is we have needs and there is talent at 40 that is more ready to play. I think the secondary and OL is a far more pressing need right now.

Yeah, I like Dalton alot as well. I think he goes in the first.

Don't think any QB would interest me at 40 except for Dalton or Ponder. Any one else besides them isn't gonna be any better than MCGee.

I like Dalton and Kaepernick. Not too sure about Ponder. Would Jerry want Mallett due to the Arkansas connection?

Oh yeah, I forgot about Kaepernick. I'd take him in the second as well

Great post, i agree with everything you said about Dalton, and I like him for the same reasons. But you also make a good point about the other talent that will still be around and ready to contribute at pick 40. Gotta stick to the script.

NO on any QB's in the 2nd.

But a little on Dalton:

I've watched Dalton his whole career, and I don't agree with the "experts" on his projected round. He won a lot of games at TCU, but a lot of that has to do with Patterson's 4-2-5 defense that is stellar every year, and the level of competition. Dalton doesn't suck, but IMO he's on the same level with McGee coming out. 4-5th rounder for me.

He is very raw by NFL standards (not as raw as McGee though) and you would think that would push him down into the 4-5 round, but the kid has got a lot going for him and he has proven he can win and not make mistakes doing it. That is a serious commodity to have when it comes to QBs and that is what will push him up the draft boards. I say he goes in the 2nd or 3rd round at the latest. Rumors of him going in the first I think are overblown. He isn't even close to being ready to play in an NFL style offense. You can't draft in the first for that reason alone.

lmao @ the love Dalton is getting..the guy is so overrated right now..he's a 4th rd talent

I still think that is too soon, and you would be reaching. Colt McCoy didn't get drafted until the 3rd last year and he is way better then Dalton. If he does go that early it will be because some QB starved team is reaching and is hoping they will get a McCoy out of them. For me Dalton was consistent every year, but never seemed to get better.

He doesn't pass the eyeball test for me, but I could be wrong. I for one never would have imagined that Josh Johnson would have had the success he has had this early. He had all the measurables, but at Kstate he couldn't his the broad side of a barn! He matured really fast with NFL coaching I guess.

I guarantee you that if we have our 3rd round pick and Andy Dalton is there we will take him. 100% guarantee. Jason Garrett loves Andy Dalton. The same way I love Patrick Peterson. I wouldn't even be shocked to see us trade up from the 3rd into the bottom of the 2nd if he is there.

If he isn't I do think we may look at Greg McElroy in the 5th or later.

Those are 2 QB names to watch when we are picking.

I hope your source is misinformed about that. On a side note, it's the red hair isn't it?? lol

If someone that we liked really dropped, I would be up for it...preferably after the late 2nd round.

I've seen Mocks that have Mallett dropping fairly far and others that have in in the 1st. Same with almost all of the other "2nd tier" guys after the top 2. They seem to be projecting all over the place, so maybe someone (Dalton, Laepernick, Mallett, Ponder, etc) if they are a value-steal.
