If Dak is released, he has a $60 million cap hit whether we keep him or release him.
Therefore, the Cowboys want to sign him to an extension to prevent that big of a hit.
Going into the Playoffs, it was almost guaranteed that he was going to get Top of the Market salary.
Now, with his disastrous performance, there is no way the Cowboys can justify paying him that nor any where near the $50 million range.
His last contract averaged $40 million a year. In those 4 years he has 1 playoff Wild Card win.
So, do you let Dak play his last year and absorb the $60 million cap hit?
Give him an a $50 Million+ extension?
Would you like him to resign but only on a sub $50 million deal?
Dak doesn't have much leverage for a trade because no team can justify to their fanbase giving Dak a premium deal.
But the Cowboys don't have much leverage either given the Cap hit.
The Cowboys fanbase will be irate if he gives Dak a premium deal which would hamper the team for the next few years.

He's not going to get a discount rate.

He's going to get an extension somewhere in the 55-60m range. The cap hit difference, once bonuses and guarantees are figured, is only a couple million from something significantly lesser on AAV.

He needs take discount. He’s made enough and current salary he’s already over paid. Can’t win with him making $50 plus million a year. I tell him 35 a year max. Or you will be cut. Course Jerry will just pay him 60 and doesn’t matter.

This is not true, it is as 25M cap hit and 35M savings with a post June 1 cut... everyone saying Todd France fleeced us is just recycling their own unresearched information.

He did fleece us. Just bc we can cut him post 1 first doesn’t change anything. He has a no trade clause. He also has a no franchise tag clause. We got fleeced. But, there is still a way out.

Two realistic options. Post 1st June 2024 cut or trade him to the Falcons if they are dumb enough and given the first is the alternative Dak would be ill advised to not play ball.

That's half true. They would still owe the $60MM they just get to break it up over a couple seasons so he would still be $25MM against the cap for both 2024 $ 2025.

It depends. If we get Belichick, he might try to squeeze 2 more years out of Dak to avoid a rebuild. If we get Harbaugh, we might blow it all up and rebuild the culture. If we keep McCarthy, that means Jerry is still pulling the strings and we’ll resign Dak until he retires a Cowboy.

Just to answer the question. Discount. It's hard to find talent in the NFL especially quarterback talent. I'm not saying Dak is elite, he's not the guy that pulls the rest of the team with him, but he is a guy that can be part of the formula. And for that formula to work he has to come at a discount price. He has to have that offensive line and running game. He needs Rookie Zeke and last year's Tony Pollard and this year's CeeDee. And that's just on one side of the ball. So if Dak is serious about really wanting to win a championship, he will work out a deal that gives a lot of thought to his supporting cast.
