Here are my "Instead Ofs":
Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno St./ James Marten, OT, Boston College
Paul Soliai, NT, Utah/ Isaiah Stanback, ??, Washington
John Wendling, FS/SS, Wyoming/ Nick Folk, K, Arizona
Jacob Ford, OLB/PR, Central Arkansas/Deon Anderson, FB/ST, Conneticut
Brandon Siler, LB, Florida/ Alan Ball, CB, Illinios
With McQuistan coming on, and Doug Free a better prospect as the heir apparent at LT, we needed a top speedster & cover guy in the secondary. Phillips & Co. were just what the Dr. ordered for McCauley's confidence.
We need a backup/future starter at NT & Soliai was the best pure NT in the draft.
Wendling is a super defensive back who, at 6-2, 222, runs a 4.5 40. You can never have enough of those guys--especially when it has still not been proven that FS has been covered. To get Wendling at #178 would have been a steal. Even if he doesn't have the skill for an NFL FS, he has shown to be a very strong SS in the box. The way Roy W. throws his body around, it would sure be nice to have a quality backup. Besides, did I miss something the second half of last season? I thought Gramatica did a very good job for us at kicker.
Just saw that we signed an undersized UDFA DE from UTEP at 6-3, 245. The guy's best year was two seasons ago with 6 sacks. Jacob Ford had 17 sacks in the two yr. 24 game career he had at Central Arkansas, w/33 TFL, & 10 FF and 9 deflections. You also can never have enough good pass rushers.
The Brandon Siler/Alan Ball comparison speaks for itself.
