The owner of the Bears was questioned about the rumors of Cowboys being interested in Lovie Smith. He angrily replied that Lovie is the Bears' coach, and that it's a shame stuff like that is being said. He said if he gets proof that the Cowboys were "sniffing" around Lovie, he would file tampering charges.

This according the the Sirius NFL Radio 2 Minute Drill.

This is more likely what Jerry Angelo, the GM said. Virginia McCaskey has one foot in the grave.

He should do that, right after he gets finished offering Lovie that new 500K per year contract offer he's got all written up.

maybe he should be talking about how the bears have the rep of being tight wads and Smith is the lowest paid coach in the league. I dont think its a huge stretch he could be enticed to return to Texas..where he is from and coach a team he grew up a fan of from past reports. Jerry would offer him more than the Bears ever would

Methinks this was just a pre-emptive strike. Similar to the Titans denying permission before permission was even requested.

All the teams fear Jerry and the shine and power of the Star. :starspin

I'm sorry guys, it wasn't the owner who went off. It was CEO and President, Ted Phillips.

That might be true, but what would the Bears want for Smith? Compensation would have to be given. Lovie Smith does hold all the cards here. If the Bears don't make him an offer he likes, he could simply refuse to sign a contract extension. Not sure if Dallas can afford to give up anything higher than a 3rd round pick for Lovie.

Perhaps I did give too much credit where credit may not have been warrented.

Thank you BS22.

Someone needs to remind him that the Bears offered, negotiated and signed Dave Wannstedt while the Cowboys were preparing for the Superbowl.

I think canoodling with a coordinator is lots different than a head coach.

Maybe, but so is sending out feelers for interest and actually hammering out a deal.

Maybe he should worry more about the Super Bowl and less about a coaching search that won't involve his sorely underpaid head coach in the first place.

Well, think about this for a second. If Chicago has no intention of paying Lovie, then they have to know that he's gone after 07. That makes him a Lame Duck Coach and nobody wants that situation. They also have to know that if they don't let Lovie go, they run the real risk of losing Rivera, there best candidate for future HC, to another team. Probably Dallas. Might be in there best interests to be reasonable if there plan is to pay Rivera nothing to become HC.
