It appears that the average of the top 5 WRs is about 84% of the average of the top 5 outside pass rushers.

Applying that to find numbers for Dez relative to Houston's new contract:

84% of 101M = 84.8M

Average over 6 years 84.8 / 6 = 14.14M

Guaranteed 84% of 52M = 43.68M

Note: If I remove the top paid WR and top paid Pass Rusher, then it drops to 81%.

Those numbers are what I have been projecting all along. Dez will get around 5-6 years with 38-42 guaranteed.

QBs, LTs, and Pass Rushers are the NFL premium positions because there are limited number of good ones.

WRs is <something> of a commodity position -- there is a slew of 1000 yard recievers and the delta between 'good' WRs who are 1000-1100 yard 7-10 TD guys and the top end guys like Dez / Megatron / AJ Green / etc in terms of production just isn't that vast.

I would include shutdown CBs in that list as well. If you can find one, that player will always be paid at the top end and there will always be a team out there who will sacrifice the cap to do it.

yeah you only have to look at Revis to know that

To me its

QB

then CB and Pass rusher pretty much tied

then LT

after that WRs/ pass catching TE's

Now I personally would put LTs a little higher but right now that is where the money is going

so teams literally valuate a top pass rusher as providing ~25% more to a team relative to a top wide receiver. interesting

Well....14 mil / year and 45 mil guaranteed ....nice job

I would be more interested in seeing which group performs better after mega deals. We have seen systematically across the board that WR are dropping production after large contracts. Would be interested to see if DE also see drop in production or if they hold up better and thus better value.

So you can have a probowl caliber RB and WR for the cost of a probowl pass rusher....not sure how I feel about that one.

I hope people don't get too comfortable with having Hardy this year. No way we would be willing to pay what he will command on the open market. Let's hope Lawrence and Gregory emerge as a reliable force.

Kind of returning to the Darrell Royal period of Collegiate Coaching, when the left tackle and pass rushing defensive ends were called the Studs of the Team.

This has been my line of thinking as well.

I think it has to do with the rarity of talent in takes to excel in being a great pass rusher in comparison to being a great receiver. Excellent pass rushers are somewhat less plentiful than excellent receivers. Greater demand due to a rare supply will usually command more monetary value than a product of a plentiful supply.

This. Well stated.

It did come out shockingly close to the calculation.

I was originally thinking 14M per, but I was thinking the guaranteed money would be lower until I did this calculation and realized that "market value" on the guaranteed money was probably at least 3x the average salary (3 x 14M = 42M).
