I just got to thinking about a few player names that have been making news for both good and bad reasons. Some players I thought would be making more of an impact that haven't, and others I didn't expect much from who have pleasantly surprised.

I have my own pre-camp 53 with some names on it that I've now changed my mind about.

Who have you written on that you didn't have before, and who has been written off of your own 53?

I've written on Terrance Williams. I was done with him, but I don't think the Cowboys are. And after an injury-filled embarrassing offseason, reports on him have been quite good. He'd be back on my 53-man roster today (grudgingly or not).

Honorable mention goes to:

Antwaun Woods. He may be earning himself a roster spot.

Charles Tapper. As always barring injury, but he'd make my roster over Ealy.

As for written off, I had much higher hopes for along Ealy and I though he'd be a force at defensive end. Now it sounds like the guy doesn't care. He's off of my 53 today.

Dishonorable mention:

Noah Brown. If Williams is in, Brown is out. Lance Lenoir is lighting up camp while Brown is missing valuable time and falling behind in a crowded room. If that doesn't change, he's off my 53.

How about the rest of you guys and gals, who's on your list?

Written off — Chaz Green. I thought he would bounce back, but so far he hasn't.

Written on — Terrance Williams. Not enough receivers have emerged yet to challenge his roster spot.

Written on — Lance Lenoir. He just keeps making great catches.

Written off — Noah Brown. Can't make the club in the tub.

Written on — Antwaun Woods. Seems to be seizing a role at 1-tech.

Written off — Kony Ealy. I was expecting him to at least be rotation worthy.

Written off — Chris Covington. I thought he'd flash, but I haven't heard or seen anything.

Written on — Charvarius Ward. The rookie is starting to make some noise.

Written off — Duke Thomas. He doesn't seem to have come back strong from his injury.

Very rational analysis and I think you are right on target.

agree on everything but Duke. Not sure but think he is playing ok. His biggest issue is size with this coach. If its holding Jourdan Lewis back, its gonna be tough for Duke to make the cut.

He might not, but I've heard pretty much every CB's name called for making a play except for him. Of course, it may be simply because the media isn't paying any attention to him. Last year, he was the unknown who jumped out during camp.

Right now Duke looks to be behind Ward and Kelly plus I think White has passed him after the scrimmage. Unless Duke makes some plays in the preseason he is starting to fall behind on the depth chart

I agree with most everything but Covington. He has made a couple of plays but nothing to big. I think he does need to make some splash plays in the games but I have written him off. He can still make the roster. Quiero is another guy making plays that he could be battling with but LB isn't too deep. I think spots 5-7 is still wide open.

There seems to be a lot more talent and depth on this year’s Cowboys training camp roster than has been in a long while. Not saying it’s a Suoer Bowl level roster but it’s defintely best I’ve seen for us in a while.

I'm not sure about Williams. I think he is playing well enough to be on the bubble. Teams don't forget the ******** and he has more than his share. I agree it is a grey area for him.

Antuaan Woods sounds like he is making a run. Tapper WILL beat out Ealy for a spot, the question is will he be healthy enough to continue his run and will he get bumped by someone else. I think Tapper stays but it's dicey because of overall decisions to be made at other positions.

I think Ealy is an easy cut. He just hasn't really ever done much in the NFL. Good risk reward, but I never really expected him to pan out.

Surprise cut may be Damien Wilson. He seems like a bone head and I think this coaching staff is sick and tired of those. Haven't heard anything positive coming out of camp about him.

Really want to see them play first. Camp can be deceiving.

TWill is gonna get a roster spot he is apparently doing good. But he is a vet amongst rookies. I do however think goodell will give him a 1 or 2 game suspension for his off field stuff.

Lenior looks to make this team and could be a star for us.

BO maybe a PS player after all. Coming on this team even though it was 7th rounder I was hearing that he was going to work good in our running game.

Ealy won’t make it. Looks as though they thought Marinelli could get him ready and back to form.

I let the coaches worry about that.

Probably going to come down to special teams for those last couple of linebacker spots so we'll definitely know more after the preseason games.

Going by what Stephen Jones said about the team having six linebackers that it feels are more than just special-teammers, though, I've got March-Lillard (who was an OTAs standout) and Wilson (who has started) as the fifth and sixth linebackers for now.

I'd agree with you.

But I've actually wondered if they might go "light" at the position and keep just five, given their needs and numbers at the other positions?

I think you would be able to "sneak" a guy like March-Lillard or Covington to your practice squad without risk unless the guys just blew up in the preseason.

That move might allow you to keep 7 receivers or 11 defensive linemen if you really wanted to.

Good lists in general. I think the toughest cuts will be at WR, TE, DL, RB, and LBer.

You can only go long at so many positions. We are gonna cut some good talent this year. With Gregory coming back-- do you keep Tapper or Ealy? Scarborough/Jackson or Rod Smith? Should we keep 4 TEs? If not-- who do you boot? If we do keep 4 TEs-- do we keep 3 QBs? Got some tough decisions to make for sure.

That's too bad about #26 'Duke' Thomas hitting yer' list,,,I think that'll put Michael Gallup as the lightest weighing dude on the team.

*I'm not positively certain on much anything anymore,,, but,,,with a name like 'Duke' I was just kinda' naturally pulling for him, I'd also thought the #83 was as "toast" as his arrest video & with the #94 back within the fold I also believe Ealy will be gone& playing for some other team b-4 seasons end & all I really got say is for the injury gremlin to stay awayo_O

Good topic! It’s still too early but a fun discussion.
Some additional guys on the Written on: Anthony Brown (actually making int’s!) Dorrance Armstrong (the guy has surprised me with his athleticism) Charles Tapper (My only hesitation here is his health. He MUST prove durable or his talent is wasted)
Written off: Chaz Green (what more is needed? Injury history and big game collapses) Rico Gathers (he can move to written on but he better show something consistent in some preseason action)

Probably depends on special-teammers. The team doesn't usually go light on linebackers because most of them are special-teammers. To go that heavy on receivers or defensive linemen, we'd probably need someone there to show they are move valuable on special teams than a sixth linebacker.

I think they'll end up going with six at the position, though, and likely try to slip the extra player at one of those other positions through to the practice squad. Of course, a lot will depend on who makes it impossible to slip them through to the PS.

But neither one of those guys have made plays. Quiero has gotten turnovers. It's very possible that Wilson and March-Lillard make the team but I could see Covington and Quiero making a push. Lanning has a chance as well. Preseason games will be huge...... In my opinion
