by CBartel from another forum: X's amd O's: DAL D vs PHI passing game
The West Coast Offense that Philly runs is a timing-based system. This means that it relies on the intermediate ans quick passing game to move the ball. They use passes on the perimeter and in the seams to move the offense and keep the QB upright. In many ways McNabb has improved his game and is beginning to resemble another West Coast QB and Cowboy adversary...Steve Young. Im sure we all would like to have a guy like that out of the game as Cowboys fans, but it is impossible to see a guy with McNabbs mobility and quick decision making and not make that comparison. The only difference is where Young excelled in the pocket McNabb struggles. His mistakes happen when you force him to stay in the pocket. He struggles with combination coverages. That is, instead of running a shear cover 2, 3, 4, or variation on man to man, the defense will play a combo of two of them. For example, say the ball is on the left hash and they are in 21 personnel on 2nd and long (5+ yards). In the west coast offense, one of their favorite plays is the 527 Smash A "leak" (dc, you should know what this is. lol) see here:

against a traditional cover 2 or 3, the QB will read the corner over the Z first. If he jumps the hitch, he just throws the corner to the outside shoulder of the Y. If the corner sinks, he just throws to the hitch. However, in a combo coverage the defensive coverage isn't so easy to identify. Now lets throw in a "21 invert" combo. This call tells the strong side to play cover 2 (SS and C) the 1 tells the weak side (FS and C) to play cover 1. The "invert" (or any specified call are the coverage) speaks only to the strong side. This tells them to invert to cover 2 to their side. The C will line up in press coverage pre-snap and bail out to the deep half at the snap. 9 times out of 10, the Z will convert his route to a "go" vs press coverage. The SS will run toward the inside hip of the Z receiver and watch the QB as he delivers the ball. Some of you may find this call familiar because it it was the same coverage Roy was in when he picked off the McNabb pass and scored in last years @ PHI game. This play had success because it showed one coverage pre-snap and totally changed at the snap. McNabb wasn't prepared for this and has never done well against it. If Dallas is selective on when they throw these unique looks at him, they can expect similar results on Sunday. Hope you all learned something from this tutorial and comments/questions are always welcome. So, as Coach Parcells would say..."fire away".
