It’s now being reported by various media outlets that the Cowboys have re-signed left tackle Flozell Adams and released fullback Oliver Hoyte. The contract details haven’t been fully released yet, but it appears to be a six year deal worth $42 million with $13 million in signing bonuses.
While that may seem like a long term contract for a 33 year old left tackle, it was thought by the best NFL cap expert on the Web (AdamJT13) that the Cowboys should make him a six year contract deal as it would likely greatly help them against the cap. I preferred a 3 or 4 year deal where the cap hit would be a bit more than a six year deal, but would allow Dallas to feasibly cut Adams after the 2008 season. With the six year deal, it may be until after the 2009 or 2010 season before they can feasibly cut Flozell.
Hoyte’s release sort of surprised me as I liked the idea between the combination of him and Deon Anderson. Anderson started blocking better and better as the season went by and had some solid ball skills. If Dallas needed a receiving threat to keep the opposing defense honest, they could go with Anderson. If they need to out-muscle a team, then they could go with Hoyte.
People often confuse Oliver Hoyte as following in the same mold as Moose Johnston, a fan favorite fullback during the Jimmy Johnson days. While Johnston was a monster blocker, he was also a very capable receiver for a fullback. A part of the Ernie Zampese/Norv Turner type offenses is to have a capable receiving fullback whom the team can put out in motion and line up out wide like a wide receiver or start at the wide receiver position and motion him back to the fullback position. By being able to do this, it does allow for the offense to tip the defense’s hand as to what type of coverage they are in and possibly allow for the offense to take a linebacker (who often is responsible for covering the fullback) out of the play.
But I think Hoyte’s release was largely due to the neck injury he suffered last season and his special teams play was pretty mediocre. Today’s teams seem to value fullbacks less and less and thus today’s fullbacks either need to be spectacular blockers or at least pretty good in special teams coverage units.
Dallas has also tendered a first and a third for Marion Barber and a first rounder for Chris Canty. More updates tomorrow as it will be the first day of free agency.
