I posted my list last night and it was not all that different from YR's here.

I think he is 100% correct Amendola stays over Jefferson because of ST.
Austin and Hurd caught less than 10 passes combined last year and they ended up as 2nd and 3rd WRs at times due to injury. Dallas isn't going to panic at Wr with T.O., Crayton, Witten and Felix Jones all looking to get 50+ passes on the year.

Yes, Amendola looks quite average on returns but we played Crayton at PR for years and he was just average. He was the same slot Wr type who is unathletic but tough. My guess is they use Pacman on some returns and Amendola on others until the WRs are healthy then Amendola gets cut if we need his spot.

I do not think we carry 3 injured WRs on the roster. I do believe they IR one of them. Perhaps the most seriously injured or perhaps Stanback as the least experienced.

You can't fill out the inactive roster with hurt guys.

I expect Justin Rogers and T. George to both make the team. We need them on special teams and George gives us an additional edge rusher which we need with Spencer out. There are too many packages with Ellis moving inside and we do not want to play him every defensive snap at his age.

The main problem with putting Stanback on IR is that he loses another entire year in his transition process. He'd enter training camp next year absolutely no further along in his maturation than he is right now.

This is a player who desperately needs to be on the team, practicing every day in order to learn the position and get ready to show whether he can play or not.

IR may be inevitable if he can't play in the harness, but that would make him a 3rd year player with absolutely no experience...that ain't good.

I'll take a crack:

QB (2) Romo, Johnson

RB (3) Barber, Jones, Choice

FB (1) Anderson

TE (4) Witten, Bennett, Curtis, Hannah

WR (5) Owens, Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Stanback (I just don't think Amendola or Jefferson are worth a roster spot; I could see us adding someone else though after the initial cutdown).

OL (9) Starting five, plus McQuistan, Holland, Procter and Free

Offense (24)

DL (6) Spears, Canty, Ratliff, Tank, Hatcher, Bowen (Could Hatcher be cut? He has just not shown up!)

LB (8) Ware, Ellis, Spencer, Z. Thomas, B. James, Carpenter, Burnett and Walden. (Could be George instead of Walden with his Viking showing; it may come down to the better special teamer).

Safety (5) Williams, Hamlin, Brown, Watkins, and Keith Davis. (I'm thinking they add Davis for special teams reasons).

Corner: (7) Newman, Henry, Pacman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Oglesby, Ball. (I'm saying Ball makes it for special teams impact).

3 special teamers.

Considering his situation, I'm not sure he can even be an effective WR this season since he will have to wear a harness all season. So, he will pretty much be relegated to kick returns anyhow.

So we enter the season with only two healthy WRs?

Those are great points.

If Austin and Hurd come back and show something this year then it won't matter too much of Stanback is still unproven come next training camp. Even if they prove that they are just scrubs it may still not matter. Jerry will then go out and bring in guys who are better and Stanback will still be a project. Just some possibilities. Some tough decisions lay ahead.

Why in hell would Stanback be cut? The only way he isn't on the 53 man roster is if he goes on IR.

53 Man roster, with trades, why & how of game last night
Quarterbacks,
Ok we know Tony Romo & Brad Johnson will make the team
Bartel will be a practice squad player, if he makes the cut, just didnt see the big deep throws from him last night. I still think if the Cowboys can get Beck or Simms or McCown they will do so, but this depends on whom the Cowboys can trade below in some scenarios.

Running backs;
Barber, Felix Jones, and Choice have made the team, so has Anderson;
Lattimore had a few problems last night, so look for him on practice squad if he clears waivers or possible trade. Whom do we trade him too? Possibly Houston or Denver.

Wide Receivers;
This is the main problem due to injuries as you know;
T O, Crayton, Austin & Hurd have the team made. You could have possibly seen a stunner trade with Hurd last night being showcased, but as you know he got hurt. Yet, just think about it, why was he being played due to Stanback & Austin being hurt?
This leaves us with Jefferson, Amendola & Todd Lowber, not a whole lot to really be happy about. So, I am thinking some vet, probaby not a big time vet, but a vet is brought in till Austin & Stanback gets back.

Offensive linemen, if another one of our starters goes down, this could get bad. As you all know and aware of, Flozell, Davis, Columbo, Gurode, Kosier and now Doug Free & Berger and Holland if he passes the physical have the team made, along with Proctor possibly, but I just dont like how he gets pushed around. Proctor has been here 4 years now, he should be big and physical now, but still gets pushed around.
So, lets see what we have after that, McQuistan kept showing to me, what Nate Newton talked about, the defensive tackle kept getting inside on him, same play over and over, you would figure McQuistan would have that down now. I once had high hopes for McQuistan, but losing faith in him now.
So, possibly a trade to Miami since Parcells and Sparano likes him. James Marten was getting killed last night, and this guy is huge at 6-7 about 320, but plays like a barbie doll. So, I see the Cowboys with Hudson Houck getting possibly another offensive linemen if one is available. Not another trade mind you, but one he might like off of the waiver wire.

Tight Ends;
Now, this could be a trade possibly,
Witten, Bennett as you know have the team made. This leaves the team with Tony Curtis and Rodney Hannah. With needs at WR, possibly linebacker, and if a QB like Simms is picked up or traded for you, could see one of these players traded. I know Hannah is kinda inexperience, but he has alot more upside, and its iffy I admit to trade Tony Curtis, but sometimes to get a player, like a good wr, you have to make a trade. Most likely Hannah will be tried to be snuck through on practice squad, but from what I have seen last 3 preseason games, no way he gets by. So, what would you do? Go for the player Hannah with more potential or the steady player like Curtis?

Defensive Linemen,
Tank Johnson, RAtliff, Canty, Spears, Bowen and most likely James Hatcher have the team made. Even though Hatcher has disappered like some zoners have mentioned, he still is somewhat steady.
That leaves you with Remi, Dixon and Junior, i havent seen too much from either one of these, but you might, just might get a low round draft pick for one of them.

Linebackers;
Injuries have hurt us here, but as you all know, Ware, Spencer, Burnett, Ellis, Zach, James have the team made. Now on to players possibly trades, George looked awesome as you all know last night, I would not in no way try to sneak him onto the practice squad. I still dont like bobby carpenter, because sometimes he plays like a barbie doll, lets just be frank folks, he just isnt physical, period. Yet, he has the team made right now due to injuries to burnett and spencer. Yet, once these guys get healthy and george starts showing stuff, you might see Carpenter traded to Miami, Just keep that option open till end of trade deadline. Tyson might be trade material too, not sure if he has the team made, but he does have value, possibly even to the Vikings in a trade. I am sure the Cowboys will try to sneak Walden onto the practice squad, he needs developing. Justin Rogers makes the team as special teamer.

Defensive backs;
Here is another strength, and possibly trades;
Newman, Henry (whom will be moved to free safety on obvious passing downs to cover the tight ends), Adam Jones, Jenkins and Scandrick have the team made. Thats 5 top corners folks, 5. THen you have Hamlin, Roy Williams, with Pat Watkins as top special teams ace. Davis may make the team, it depends on what the team thinks of Coutney Brown, this guy to me, Brown just doesnt seem like he likes to tackle and come up in the hole when safety is suppose too. That leaves Brown, Olgesby, and Ball as possiible trade bait. I like Olgesby the best of all, but you cant have everything.

Kickers and punters
L. P has team made as snapper, so does Folk and McBrair.

So, I think, WR possible trade but not a big name, Cowboys might even wait for waiver wire, so not to spend too much. Offensive line backups, I still have faith in Doug Free, but might need a bigger center. Linebackers with Smith and George have trade value and Bobby Carpenter later if need be, after Burnett and Spencer get back. Olgesby, Ball or Brown might be traded, along with Curtis or Hannah and Lattimore possibly.

Practice squad
Walden
Lattimore if not traded, sneaks through waivers
Dixon
maybe Marten, James, to wake him up
Lowber
I dont think Hannah would go through waivers,
Bartel
Davis

i like your list, with the exception of Amendola, i see the Cowboys bringing in a vet that gets cut. and even at that i would keep Jefferson over Amendola, i think it was a telling sign when TO was thinking of making Amendola's locker into an entertainment center.

QB (Romo, B. Johnson)

Dallas may go after either John Beck or Chris Simms if either gets released. They probably wouldn’t be #2 since they’ve got to learn the scheme and everything and Brad Johnson can placehold. I was skeptical of them picking up these guys because of the placeholding situation, but since the team only has 4 half/full backs, there’s room here. Problem is with the injuries at WR, it may be tougher for them to pick up.

agree

TB (Barber, F. Jones, Choice)

agree

FB (Anderson)

yep

WR (Owens, Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Stanback, Amendola)
still kinda doubt Amendola plays if he makes the team, and IMO most likely ends up on the PS. I think despite what Jerry said last night, somebody not on this roster now will be here in a day or two.

TE (Witten, Curtis, Bennett)

OT (Adams, Colombo, Free, McQuistan)

McQ may start at LG early on, but I think they want him at offensive tackle.

I agree, I think Marten might be gone

OG (Holland, Kosier, L. Davis, Berger)

I think Berger saved himself a roster spot with his performance against the Vikings. The team is probably terribly disappointed in James Marten (me too). Hudson Houck loves his O-Linemen big and doesn’t seem to like Marten being too light.

agree, and wont be surprised if one other new backup OL ends up here this weekend too

C (Gurode, Proctor)

Well, let’s just hope Gurode doesn’t get hurt. Next year it’s a priority that Dallas find a draft pick who can play both center and guard.

I'm not 100% Proctor will be here

DEFENSIVE ENDS (Canty, Ratliff, Bowen, Hatcher)[/B]

I’d personally like to see 5 DE’s for depth purposes, but they simply don’t have anybody else worth making the roster at this moment (Marcus Dixon may in the future, but he’s been hurt). Very concerned about the depth here, particularly with Bowen’s inability to stop the run.

here where I strongly disagree with you and some others...Ratliff is not taking Spears DE job...and Spears is not moing to NT...he's been arugably the best DL on the team this TC and preseason, and he is unquestionably playing the best DE right now

NOSE TACKLES (T. Johnson, Spears)

To make up for a possible lack of depth, they’ve got Spears and Ratliff being able to switch from DE to NT. I think people will be surprised at Spears this year. He actually played well in September and played great in December of last season and now with a year of Wade’s system under his belt and coming into the game much fresher, he could have a nice year.

thats why he isnt moving to NT

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS (Ware, Ellis, Spencer, Walden, George)

The Cowboys could re-sign Keith Davis, but there’s got to be questions about what went down in Miami and he’s not going to start at safety in Dallas. And usually in a situation between a veteran and a rookie, teams go with rookies because of cost and upside. Plus, with Spencer hurt they’ll probably want some depth on the outside.

I hope they keep George too...Rogers is a waste of a roster spot IMO

INSIDE LINEBACKERS (Z. Thomas, James, Carpenter, Burnett)

I’m also concerned about inside linebacker depth. I’d feel better if Carpenter could take on blockers consistently. If either starter goes out, they’ll probably put Burnett in anyway, a guy I’m not very high on.

T Smith is gonna make a tough cut for them I think

CORNERBACKS (Newman, A. Henry, A. Jones, Scandrick, Jenkins, Ogelsby)

agree...Ball is probably traded

SAFETIES (R. Williams, Hamlin, Watkins, Brown)

Brown hasn’t impressed me, but again he’s cheap and has upside. They’ll be taking Roy out on passing downs, which will drive me nuts when I hear announcers say he was taken out of passing downs in 2007 (he was actually taken out on some 1st and 2nd downs last year).

I think Brown is getting cut, maybe for Davis, or maybe for another young safety
