Yes Indeedy, Dallas' Defense is Better than Before

Hate seeing Wade Phillips not getting any credit for Dallas’ 12-1 season? The media pundits claim the team was built by Parcells (funny, Jerry Jones gets a lack of credit) and that it doesn’t matter anyway…the defense isn’t any better and the team is being carried by the offense and Jason Garrett.

Well, let’s take a look at the stats:

Category………………………2006…………2007

Passing Yards Per Game……..233……………234.5

Yards Per Attempt…………..7.31…………….6.43

Pass Attempt/TD Allowed…..20.4……………30.1

Pass Attempt/INT………….28.3……………..26.7

Pass Attempt/Sack……….....15.0…………….14.1

QB Rating Allowed………..83.2……………..73.2

Rushing Yards/Game…….....103.7…………….90.7

Yards Allowed/Carry……….3.87……………..3.89

Pass Defense DVOA………+8.4%....................-6.7%

Run Defense DVOA……….-9.4%....................-7.4%

So let’s see, dramatic improvements on pass defense…in particular the important categories of QB rating allowed and passing yards allowed per attempt. The run defense is arguably not as strong as last year (run defense DVOA is slightly worse), but the yards allowed per attempt is virtually the same.

I think the fact of the matter is that the media was too busy comparing Wade to Norv Turner and too worried about “Camp Cupcake” that they are having a hard time explaining Wade’s success. And while Parcells still deserves credit for Dallas’ success, there’s also the reminder of the constant hooplah that seemingly surrounded Parcells’ reign with Dallas. Whether it was a strained relationship with a player or questions about his retirement, those situations seemingly have ceased under Wade.

You would think the logic of taking a 9-7 team to a 12-1 record would hit people of Wade’s influence on the team, here’s to hoping that the raw stats will

Rich, you've got the rushing yards allowed per game backward. It's 90.7 for this year, and it was 103.7 last year.

Changed. Thanks.

One other factor is the strength of the opponent. Was last year's schedule a little more difficult than this year? All in all, I think this defense is vastly improved over last year's. Wade's style, both defense and offense, is more player friendly.

Well, the DVOA (which takes into consideration SoS) is far better than it was last year, so it's not really much of a factor.

With all do respect you just cant compare a FULL season, to a season 13 games in. As we all know alot of the damage came late in the season. Let's see how we finish at the end of the year. Until then it's not a fair comparison.

No, they say we've had the 17th-toughest schedule so far. Our remaining schedule (the final three games) is 22nd-toughest. Last year, they also had our schedule ranked 17th.

Sagarin has our schedule ranked 12th right now. Last year, he ranked it 23rd.

Just because the defense is improved doesnt mean it is where it needs to be.

We have played teams this year that didnt have their starting QB or bad QB and team combo's.

But lets review them all

  1. Eli and the Giants - lit us up
  2. Trent Green and Miami -
  3. Rex and the Bears -
  4. Bulger and the Rams -
  5. Trent and Bills -
  6. Brady and New England -
  7. Tavaris and the Vikings -
  8. McNabb and Philly
  9. Eli and Giants -
  10. Campbell and Skins -
  11. Kellen and the Jets
  12. Favre/Rodgers and GB -
  13. Kitna and Detroit -
Should we really be ecstatic over defending and winning against this WEAK QB pool?

I guess for some people, improvements aren't positive and moving toward one of the better defenses in the league. It takes positive progress before being great. No one said this is a great defense, just stating that we are making progress.

other than Brady, Romo, Peyton, Favre, and Anderson, what other QBs have done diddly squat this year? Sure Tavaris had a few nice games. Jason Campbell had a few nice games. Kitna and Brees had a few nice games......but all in all, besides those first 5, the rest of the league as been at best average to mediocre

I think we have progressed... but we need to put things in perspective. The caliber of QB and overall teams has been very poor in alot of cases.

The 3rd and long will be our undoing. Drives me nuts.

Just when I think we ar getting off the field they get 1st down on 3rd and 15.:bang2:

FOCUS - I am only talking Cowboys and their opponents.

Just like it is every year, every other team is playing the same "weak" quarterback pool, too -- or MUCH weaker.

Have we faced a team who had to use John Beck, Todd Collins, Brian Griese, Kyle Boller, Shaun Hill, Vinny Testaverde, Matt Moore, Cleo Lemon, Steve McNair, Alex Smith, Sage Rosenfels, Josh McCown, Luke McCown, David Carr, Brodie Croyle, Quinn Gray, Kelly Holcomb, Kerry Collins, Chris Redman, Joey Harrington, Brooks Bollinger, Patrick Ramsey, Brock Berlin or Tim Rattay?

Every starting quarterback we faced except Trent Edwards and Kellen Clemens was the team's projected starter going into the season, and Edwards and Clemens have won the starting jobs now.

my point was, that we have played against Favre and Brady.....and we have Romo...so there goes 3 of the 5 QBs I mentioned....we arent the only team playing mediocre QBs.

since mediocre seems to be the league norm for the most part, a lot of teams are playing against crappy QB play.

That list makes up the majority of the NFC? Who else are we suppossed to play?

The Vikes with Tavaris are suppossed to be the hottest team now, according to the media. The Bills are playing Clevland for a playoff spot with Edwards at QB. Kitna is a pretty decent QB himself and the Lions were 6-2 at one point.

We also have to figure in injury. Henry and Newmann havent played together much this year. From observer, this defense brings more pressure...but gives up too many 3rd and longs.
