YR's 25 Ways to Improve the NFL
by Yakuza Rich
http://yakuzarich.blogspot.com

With the NFL rules committee looking at some rule changes this year, I decided to come up with my own suggestions as to what I think would improve the game. In fact, I came up with 25 of them. Here goes:

1. Only 1 commercial timeout after a score. Nothing is more annoying that a team scoring a TD, kicking the PAT, then going to commercial, then kicking off, then going back to commercial.

2. Hits to the helmet of the QB should be split into 5 yards (incidental) or 15 yards (personal foul). Hits to the helmet on the QB is a good rule given how vulnerable they are, but what’s the difference between running into the kicker being split out into 5 yards and 15 yards, along with face masks?

3. Adopt the college replay system. The “challenge” system the way the NFL does it is extremely hokie as coaches have to hope that the jumbo-tron people to show the replay in a timely manner. And if it can work in the college game, which is filled with horrific and questionable refereeing, it can definitely work in the pro game.

4. Make hits the helmet, running into the kicker, and face masks reviewable. They are not “judgement” calls like pass interference or holding, so they should be reviewable.

5. Either get rid of the franchise tag or limit the franchise tag to a one time only deal for players. I don’t know of another profession where you can fulfill the terms of your contact and then when you want to work elsewhere, you are forced to stay around.

6. Make the football easier to grab. The NFL ball is pretty slick and making it slick doesn’t really help the game.

7. Allow for a special DVD set of coach’s film on each game. It would probably be something that could sell well with hardcore football fans and bring many new fans into the game.

8. Either allow Youtube to show NFL clips or create a site where fans can put together NFL clips. The NFL clips on Youtube are created by fans usually to show off their favorite player or team. It’s also a great way to bring more fans into the game.

9. For any team caught videotaping the other team’s sidelines or messing with frequency signals they should forfeit the game. That would at least seem more like a fair punishment in the opinions of the fans.

10. More refs in the game. An increase of 2 more refs on the field would allow for them to see plays more clearly. For example, the Champ Bailey returned INT required a ref to somehow sprint downfield with Bailey to see the play. If a ref had been positioned on that side of the field the entire time, then perhaps he could have seen the play better.

11. Move the 53 man roster to a 56 man roster with special clauses being that you are allowed one punter, one kicker, and one long snapper. If a team has a center who is also the long snapper, then they are allowed a 55 man roster.

12. The 45 active on game day should be changed to 48 active on game day, with the same rule for punter, kicker, and long snapper.

13. Start a program that is more aggressive in finding, training, and replacing referees. Too many referees still call horrible games and don’t even know the rules. There needs to be a system in place where there is an abundance of well trained referees and the referees are closely judged and those who don’t meet the mark get replaced.

14. Increase the statistical studies of the league, particularly pass defense stats (i.e. times thrown at, passes completed, etc).

15. Force the Steelers to put Field Turf in at Heinz Field.

16. No team should be allowed to share a baseball field on their football field.

17. Offensive Pass Interference should be 10 yards AND loss of down.

18. Have the late night games start on time. The Sunday Night games are supposed to start at 8:15 and they start at 8:30 and the MNF games are supposed to start at 8:30 and they usually start at 8:40.. Start them at the time they are supposed to.

19. For late Night Games on the East Coast, start at 7:15 EST. Very aggravating to stay up until past Midnight and having to go to work the next morning.

20. Move the Super Bowl to a Saturday. See “having to go to work the next morning” note. Also, it would allow for those who go to the game to travel back home the following Sunday.

21. Change the “spiking the ball is a delay of game penalty.” If the player truly spikes the ball, then penalize him. But going gestappo on players who are barely slamming the ball is pointless.

22. Once the ball is kicked off, it’s a live ball that the kicking team can advance.

23. Make Referees full time employees.

24. At the Pro Bowl, have a 40 yard or 100 meter dash to determine the fastest player in the league each season. Each team can have a representative from the team, regardless of where they are on the 53 man (check that, 56 man) roster. This would be interesting and would probably help in developing new stars in the game.

25. Make Field Goals reviewable. Something that should have been allowed a long time ago.

Some great points..............Hienz field should be a huge topic - what will it take? A top shelf athlete suffering a season or a career ending injury before they are forced to make improvements. That field is a joke....

Replay is another great point. Our system could be greatly improved.

remove sudden death from overtime.. it sucks when only one team gets a chance.. or remove field goals from over time and keep it sudden death.. either one works for me.

Agree with the hit to the head on the QB.. should be split up and not an auto 15 yarder

Don't like the live ball as soon as it is kicked rule change.. it works fine the way it is.

A very good proposal that the networks will never allow the owners to implement. There are just too many billions involved in ad revenue which the networks are trying to profit from after paying the league for television rights.

Agreed. Personally, I would support any change which would strain the salary cap restrictions.

I thought that the NFL had already made some alterations in the ball after the Seattle fiasco a couple of seasons ago..?

Good idea, but would the league have royalty rights to the clips? Would the networks airing the games also profit? Money talks and I doubt that either would agree to that proposal if they didn't have a hand in the pot.

Don't forget to give qualified referees fair compensation. With all the billions going into pro football, refs wages are pathetic in comparison. Bad refs should be cut completely out of the equation, but the good or great refs should reap in the reward of making the games better.

Agreed. Who wants to see a diamond etched into a football field?

With the way the MLB's season is expanding into November for playoff teams, keeping both sports apart in separate stadiums will also eliminate any scheduling conflicts.

Don't agree on the loss of down, but a 10 yard penalty is a good idea.

Don't agree. Start the games at 7 pm Eastern time. The games are coming on too late at 8 pm or later in my book. Watching football should be a primetime affair, not a snooze affair.

No, don't change tradition. And can the Super Bowl be pushed back into January? I know. I know. Money talks.

This is where the extra refs would pay off in determining what's a taunting spike or not. One refs opinion isn't probably the same as another's.

I'll have to think about that one.

It would also make interesting footnotes for players that eventually reach the Hall of Fame.

It would be a long time coming. I don't trust the eyesight of refs already. If the ball flies over an upright too close, I would rather a video review decide if the field goal was good or not. Three points could be the deciding factor in a lot of close games.

^ If the games started at 7:00 PM EST then that means Monday night games that are played on the West Coast would start at 4:00 west coast time. Too many people would still be working on the West Coast.

how about a "Demarcus Ware Rule" where you can challenge off sides.......

Or does that fit under the "better refs" rule?

Good list. Here's a few more:

26. Cut out some of the preseason games. Who wants to watch a bunch of third and fourth-string players go at it at regular season prices? The NFL owners would never agree to lose that revenue, but if you're going to have games played then make the season 18 games and then at least you give them some meaning.

27. Shorten the bye week period. The current system starts in Week 4 after only three games and ends in Week 14. Week 4 is way too early, and there is no reason you can push it back a week or two to Week 6. With four teams taking a bye every week, Week 13 would be the last week.

28. Overtime needs to be more equitable. Instead of a coin toss, use a form of the college system with both sides getting a possession. How is making it fairer AND getting to see MORE football a bad thing?

29. Bring back group celebrations. Please?

30. This really isn't the NFL's jurisdiction, but... Give former players a bigger say in the Hall of Fame voting process. What rationale are they using that says journalists are a better judge than players?

I disagree with Field Turf at Heinz Field. Natural grass is always the best option.

They should have remedied that situation by an even simpler but broader rule; Only NFL games may be played at any NFL stadium during the course of the NFL season.

Having a Pitt game and the WPIAL playoffs there during the a time of inclement weather preceeding the Steelers' game was the problem, not the field surface.

I thought the franchise tag was limited in that you can't tag the same player two years in a row. I am not going to feel too sorry for a guy that gets tagged. He is getting a top 5 salary for his position. Seems pretty fair to me.

I don't think that overtime should be messed with in the NFL. They really can't go to a college system because offenses and kickers are pretty good. That could lead to games where there are 8 or more overtimes. Pretty soon you could be wearing out teams. It is still pretty rare that games go to over time. I also believe that the stats have shown that in most overtime games both teams do get a shot at the ball and a pretty equal chance at winning the game. A tie hurts a team more in college than it does in the NFL due to the NFL having a playoff system.

Is natural grass the best option? I had heard talk about how the newer field turf provides more consistent footing since it is easier to maintain than grass. The field turf was also not punishing like the old astroturf fields. It behaves much like natural grass, but doesn't get torn up like the real stuff. Just wondering because that is some of the stuff I had read in the last few years about field turf.

All good points YR.

18. Have the late night games start on time. The Sunday Night games are supposed to start at 8:15 and they start at 8:30 and the MNF games are supposed to start at 8:30 and they usually start at 8:40.. Start them at the time they are supposed to.

That aggravates the heck out of me, especially if I am taping a game. If kickoff is at whatever time then the whistle should blow at that time, not 15 minutes later so the networks can squeeze in a few more commercials.

I hate commercials! Anything that reduces them, I am in favor of (except me having to pay the players' salaries of course). They should just lengthen halftime and show a bunch more commercials then. That way, I can make a beer or pizza run or take care of whatever crap my wife is nagging me to do.

19. For late Night Games on the East Coast, start at 7:15 EST. Very aggravating to stay up until past Midnight and having to go to work the next morning.

I used to live in So Cal and now live in NC. I don't mind missing some of the first quarter if I can't get off work early but I hate having to stay up til nearly 1:00 am to watch the end of a game when I have to work the next morning. God help us if the game goes into OT!

As for changing OT, I am not in favor of it and hate the way college games work. Either win it in regulation or take your chances in sudden death. I think too many college teams play for the tie knowing they will have a good chance to win in OT rather than going for the win in regulation.

Field Turf is a huge improvement over the old Astro-Turf but natural grass is always the best option. More consistent footing has its benefits but the give of natural grass is always better for player's knees.

Grass doesn't get torn up if it's properly cared for over the course of one NFL game. The problem with Heinz field is that they played IIRC a Pitt game thursday in the rain then four high school playoff games complete with marching bands friday and saturday then expected the field to be ready for the Steelers night game. I think that Heinz Field is the only stadium that is home to both an NFL and NCAA team. The grass just doesn't have time to heal.

#1 - I hate this more than anything. It slows the game down so much that you almost forget you are watching a game. Money rules and the NFL doesnt care if two breaks back to back screw up the game, they make more money.

#20 - Never thought about that before, great point and makes sense.
