Yankees about to conquer the South again, Lee ready to bow to the

I don't hear a fat lady singing. Besides, there is a limit to what Lee is actually worth. If the Yankees want to go far above and beyond that, fine and dandy. The risk involved in a $100/$125+ million dollar contract is ENORMOUS. If you think AJ Burnett's contract went bad, if Lee falters. Wow. $23-$25M per season. That WILL cripple the Yankees.

It won't cripple the Yankees. It will be a huge financial set back, that without question but it will not cripple the Yankees.

If the Yankees sign Lee, I see no reason he would not do well there. He has pitched well in both leagues, he is not over the hill and he has pitched in Philadelphia, which is as hard a place to play sports as there is in the World. The concern would obviously be the structure of the contract and if Lee is able to perform the length of the contract. Those, IMO, would be the major issues.

If Lee signs a $25M / year contract and busts? Yes it will. The Yankees won't be able to buy the next top pitcher at $25M a year with Lee, AJ, CC, Tex, and A-Roid's contracts on the books. Their annual salary would reach well over $230M.

I don't think that bothers them necessarily. Once they have determined that a contract is a sunk cost (Pavano, Wright) they move on and forget it ever happened. When you have that much money to spend you can recover from a terrible contract. That's their biggest advantage, not buying the best players, but being able to recover when they screw up.

I like how Lee is great when he's wearing a Rangers uni, but if he signs for Steinbrenner dollars he's all of a sudden a huge risk.

Transparent.

I thought the Yankees were home grown and didn't buy players? *stir stir stir*

:D

That's alright if the Yanks buy Cliff Lee. The Rangers will still be better and beat up on the aging Yanks yet again. The Rangers are young and getting better. Let's not forget that the Rangers have arguably the best farm system in baseball.

Signing Cliff Lee won't solve the rest of the Yankees' glaring holes, particularly Sabathia, Pettite, and Burnett's decline.

Typical Yanks...

If you can't beat 'em... buy 'em...

I don't like the Yankees but I know if it was not for a salary cap in the NFL then the Cowboys would be the Yankees of football. I'm not going to bash them for buying players. it just makes it more enjoyable to watch when the Yankees go down in flames.

How is Sabathia a glaring hole?

I agree. In fact, this is exactly how I would feel if baseball wasn't such a joke and if I actually watched it.

People shouldn't resent the Yankees for doing everything they can to win. It's the MLB system which is such a joke. I cannot tell you how glad I am that the NFL doesn't employ the same system (despite the fact that the Cowboys would certainly be beneficiaries of such).
