Please allow me to preface this post by pointing out how I obviously do not post much, but I read this site almost daily, and enjoy and respect the opinions of nearly all of you, even the ones I may not agree with.

That said, I am having a difficult time understanding the common debate about what is wrong with this team.

Is it Garrett's fault? Is it the scheme? And on down the line....

Sure, things like injuries and bad breaks don't help, but every team has them.

It's as if there's discussion over if it's the faulty brakes, or maybe it's the timing belt, or a carburetor thing...meanwhile there's a cracked engine block on the vehicle. Please humor me and read on....

(For those of you rolling eyes at yet another "Jerry is the problem" thread, I do not think I am breaking any news here, and there's nothing that says you need to read on...)

Yes, the schemes of Marinelli and Linehan appear to be dated for today's NFL. Even when this were not the case, those two combined for a nearly incomprehensible 21-63 record as HC. Certainly I realize that some fine coordinators have not done well in the top spot, but my goodness is that the best that is available to hold these spots on a 2017 NFL team? You have to do something very wrong to be that futile with regard to W/L record. Winning players/coaches have a certain intangible with regard to how and why they always seem to find a way to get it done. The opposite has to hold true as well.

I also refuse to believe that Jason Garrett is one of the 32 best men in the world as far as being qualified to be and NFL HC. The whole "line up and beat your man" is fine when you are monumentally better than every other team from a talent standpoint. Today's NFL does not allow for the stockpiling of talent in that regard, and also probably explains why the loss of one or two particular players affects this team much more than others. Most coaches scheme to exploit the weaknesses of their opponent, as well as adjust along the course of a game once the other side's gameplan becomes obvious. This staff does not appear to work that way. Not only is no advantage gained, but Dallas is at a very serious disadvantage in that area.

The above, in my humble observation, adds up to a reasonably talented roster (thank you Mr. McClay, and to a lesser degree Stephen Jones as well for somewhat castrating your father's desire to deem himself a talent evaluator) underachieving to a very high level. In other words, this staff does much more with less than I recall seeing elsewhere. Many clubs are coached and schemed into success despite limited talent. The opposite seems to be the case in Dallas.

There's a point on it's way shortly folks, I promise.....LOL

Which would be....a real staff is not an option in Dallas. What type of coach would stand for Jerry insistence on meddling? What HC worth much of anything would allow themselves to be undermined by halftime speeches by the owner? Jerry himself is so lost in his own ego and hype that he cannot understand that a few inspirational words cannot overcome the overall message with regard to the lack of power the HC in Dallas holds in the first place.

That only scratches what is likely a very long surface. Who knows what type of things go on? Jerry probably attends player/coach meetings he has no business being anywhere near. Maybe he goes as far as to make "suggestions" with regard to game planning. I will not become ridiculous with exaggeration and go as far as to accuse him of trying to call plays, but you damn well know he WANTS to, and so forth.....

I'm sure some of you will say that these things don't matter, or he is the owner and can do whatever he wants. Maybe, but no other organization in pro sports is run this way, and with good reason. After decades of futility doing something a particular way, and in a fashion done by no one else, you cant sit here and tell me it isn't a very large part, if not THEE part of the issues with this organization.

Bob Kraft is a widely respected owner whose success need not be detailed here. The best thing Mr. Kraft did was hire the right people and stay out of the way. Not enough for Jerry. Decades of futility notwithstanding, this is going to happen HIS way, or not at all.

From someone (like many of you reading this) who was in love with the Dallas Cowboys long before this egomanic billionaire decided to play fantasy football, I long for the day when Jerry (who I in ultimate irony think could be the very best OWNER in all of pro sports) is no longer in the picture, and the overall culture ****** this organization so desperately needs has a shot to actually take place. Until then folks, debate untimely clapping and lack of scheming all you like, but none of it matters much up against the rest.

Garrett, to the joy of many here, will eventually be let go, only to be replaced with a very similar puppet. Even the most shiny and bright paint job on our aforementioned vehicle would only take us so far unless our cracked engine block is handled first. The sad part is that it wont be anytime soon, but it will be at some point, and I eagerly await getting my beloved Dallas Cowboys back into my life. If they never win another title, that's fine, I've had my share, and many a Browns or Lions fan would jump at the shot to swap history with any of us. However, at least it wont be because the owner of the team refuses to do the right thing, or as much as admit that his way of running a pro sports organization is not effective after 20+ years of failure.

You need not step aside Jerry!! Simply hire a qualified GM, then allow HIM to select the HC, who allows HIM to select the coordinators. How about if us fans collectively agree to all say in unison, if the team wins another title, that it was all YOUR doing, although it wouldn't have been? Is that good enough? You seem to sleep well claiming Jimmy's titles as your own, why not again? Just think about it sir.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying. But Dallas is still a marque franchise that alone is a big draw.

Do you think McVay would of passed up a shot to coach Dallas last season, if Jerry had offered him a shot instead of the Rams?

Marinelli's scheme is pretty dated. Linehan's schematics are not so much dated as the playcalling is predictable based on the limited amount of formations and personnel they run. You can see it when they decide to pass and the other team plays zone and know exactly where to line up in zone to take away the receivers routes.

It also doesn't help that we have nothing at the Z-Receiver spot and Witten, for all intents and purposes, is done. Nobody to clear out the middle to allow Beasley to work underneath. This team really needs a receiver that can beat defenses on the long ball and a TE that can get open deeper, particularly on the seam and wheel routes to open things up for Beasley.

Pretty much lays it all out in a way that is clear and undeniable despite the fact that some here will still try and defend Red Ball.

As anyone with any kind of intelligence knows Jerry is the key problem; no real coach will come here and he will not go get one after suffering the years with BP.

So we are left with as the OP says PUPPETS. Now we could get lucky and find a young guy willing to put up with Jerry that could be REALLY GOOD. That is about as good as we can reasonably hope for as long as Jerry is around.

However Jerry's ego will war with his common sense (yes he does have that) as regards to what is going on now. Red Ball is outmatched once he does not have the edge in talent. Marinelli is out dated. Linehan is good but he has the fatal flaws of wanting to be cute and also a need to pass despite it being better that they run. I can hopefully see that Marinelli and Linehan are gone after this season but its a flip of the coin whether that will make things better or not depending on who replaces them. Red Ball is safe I believe this season- UNLESS the team totally quits. That is the ONLY way he is gone this year.

Barry Switzer held the Lombardy trophy aloft saying to Jerry “We did it our way baby”.

At this juncture Jerry thought he could buck the rest of the NFL and do it “his way”.

The last 22 years has proven him wrong but he still hasn’t gotten the message and at this point I doubt he ever will.

Until the front office drastically changes then the results on “the field” won’t change much from what we’ve seen these last 22 years no matter who is HC, OC or DC

You should post more often. We need more people around here that can think beneath the surface.

I don’t think JG should stay..but I also don’t think any coach will come here who is worth having because with Jerry you can’t even have control over who your coordinators are. He names you HC and then hires you coordinators etc..so basically Jerry is the part time HC and JG is his intern/snitch/company man.
This doesn’t work. It’s an organizational issue. Jerry needs to either become the actual head coach or let someone else actually do the job fully. You can’t have a pretend HC which has no power or authority. Meanwhile Jerry is partying, doing his ownership social events etc..

There are things about Jerry I love...but this one is killing us.

We can’t know..but what I do feel confident assuming is that McVay wouldn’t have the same success here as he is having with an organization that gives him the authority over his players, assistants, coordinators etc..
A head coach needs this power to succeed. Jerry would not have given it to McVay.

I recall posting in the past, not sure if here, about how Jerry flat out refuses to eat coaches contracts, paying coaches to not coach.

Considering that the man is far from frugal, this philosophy makes little sense, but so do many other things within the organization .

Mike Zimmer overlapping the Parcells era is a prime example. Not that Zim isnt or wasnt an excellent football coach, but Jerry talked BP into keeping him because he just extended him.

No disrespect to Zim, but him and his 43 had no biz being meshed with one of the true innovaters of the 34, and the whole BP time here was set back by a couple of years we didnt really have...over a few hundred grand at the time.

Sure, the timing of it allowed DeMarcus Ware to be here, but where did it get us? Really not much more than the HOF talents of guys like him, Witten, and possibly a few others very sadly squandered away. Parcells brought in enough talent, and Mr McClay has been remarkable, to where the team could be respectable despite subpar to reasonably good coaches that had to work with the handicap of the owner's meddling/undermining. That all adds up to about 8-8 once they cancel each other out, then worse once the players have quit, which happens when respect cannot be properly commanded. 2010, and probably...right about now.

Yes, two 13-3 abberations, but coupled with a thoroughly unprepared team and squandered one seed in both cases. (Refer back to the subpar to good HCs and the overall culture)

Jerry doesnt eat coaches contracts. He won't admit it but he has little respect for even the position of head coach. Thats in large part of why undermining that person is not something he recognizes. Well, that and sheer narcissism but thats for another day lol.

I have no info on the contract status of JG, Rod and the other loser, but Id be willing to wager if they have any significant time left, they all return, with Jerry, who could sell snow to an eskimo, spinning it they way only he could. We will all return. As tempting as it is to want to try to do something, anything, to protest...we just cant. Its in our blood. We need to outlive this man. Its our shot to get more than we've already been given from this team, which for some of us, will be the extent of it for their lifetime. Thats a terrible and depressing thought in a league that is designed to give each team a fair shot every year.

I really would love to genuinely like and appreciate Jerry. I really would. But for all his great qualities, its tough to believe in a leader that refuses to see that certain things, done by no one else anywhere ever, with decades of futility as proof, will not work the way he wants or expects them to.

Outlive him. Only chance. We cant change our blood and we cant give it up no matter how maddening or frustrating it may become. He has us by the nuts and he knows it, so his fantasy football game will continue to continue.
