Sort of unrelated but I don't feel like starting another thread...

We're in an interesting position because 1) we've done so well in the draft lately that we're in a position to build a young team for the future, and 2) we have an elite QB in the final years of his career so we know we need to make an attempt to win now.

Pending what they do at the RB position, the offense is set for the remainder of Romo's career and many years after that. The O-line's future is extremely bright, we have a slew of talented young WRs, we have other talented skill position players. Sure, Witten's candle will burn out soon (probably before Romo's) but we'll find a place for him and we'll likely start to see Escobar take over the majority of snaps. And, as I said, RB is still a question mark. With the O-line though, I'm not too concerned about the position.

That brings us to the defense. I think the Sean Lee situation is extremely interesting. Here's a guy who was possibly the best player on the defense even when he was playing alongside a future HOFer Demarcus Ware in his prime. That's how good Sean Lee was/is. Unfortunately, as soon as he hit his prime about 3 years ago, he's been constantly sidelined by injuries. In the past 48 games (not including playoffs), he's played in 16. That's 1 of the past 3 seasons combined. In the past 32 games, he's played in 6. Now, there are a lot of IFs surrounding Lee. But let's say all the IFs work out in our favor: 1) IF Sean Lee ever plays again, 2) IF he goes back to playing like he was before all the injuries, 3) and IF he never has another injury again... Even if all those things happen, he's almost 30. By what age do superstar defensive players start to lose their edge and get replaced by young players? 32-33? That means even if all those things happen, we'll still be looking to get rid of him in about 3 years. Fortunately, that's about the same time we'll be looking to replace Romo.

The rest of the defense is a matter of talent and not age. The defense is extremely young. Even if we bring back McClain and Carter at LB, they'll be good players for longer than Romo will be in the league. The issue is finding talent though. We have a lot of young question marks: Crawford, Lawrence, Hitchens. But we really need bonafide star players. Will we find immediate contributors in the draft? Will we have to look toward free agency? I think these questions are tough to answer since we're in an interesting position. If we look toward the draft, those players might not reach their prime until Romo is done, and then our Super Bowl chances might be done too. But if we go heavy in free agency, we might have a dark future for a long time in a few short years after Romo is done.

Well done!

I largely agree with what you wrote.

Let me add this: We need lee to become the monster player he onct promised to be. We need a monster DE that ware once was. We need a monster corner like Deion once was.

Three blue-chip players to push and be roll models for the rest of this runt unit and we are Super Bowel contenders.

Now, can we find the mosnter DE and corner?
This year? Doubtful.

With the cap I see us getting marginal players in FA this year and not much (for now) in the draft.
that gift us a window of opportunity at 2 years, tops.
Git er done Jerra and Soon.

Gimme's too much of a studious intellectual for me on a casual basis, but he and I have had serious discussions already about his erudition and genuflection in general and specific.
We are One, in the End- never to make conflicting party plans, but always appreciating the other's path to prosperity.

HEY BUD LETS PARTY !!!!

It would have to be where you are, at least:
You and Me in a border town like El Paso, where I am?

I see arrests and riots going down. Possible national attention...
This isn't '82 anymore, my man. You and I- we talking not only explosions, but 50,000 years of fallout for the local population to contend with.

Safest for us to keep this on the message board...

They are playing money ball with the defense. That was the whole reason to shift to the 43 simple system of Rod / Kiffin. Trying to get production out of young guys with motors and some cheap journeymen or troubled vets.

I give then credit for trying to think outside the box here. I think they could get by with a bit more pass rush and some good nickle play by their LB core. The cupboards are pretty bare on the defense once you look at who left and injuries. Need a great draft and hope it gells quickly by mid season.

I think Murray means as much to protecting the defense as anything honestly. Something that JG took awhile to learn.

In all seriousness- well said.
I think you hit it all right on the head there.

Dear mens and womans I come to address the yin and yang of the Cowboys, our heroes, who are on a team with a GREAT (Tony the Tiger echo chamber effect) OFFENSE and a defense that is best described asa group of journeymens, never-weres and potential stars who half never showed their greatness.

before any one of you college educated peoples say "But gimme, big-brained dweller of the Farmers Branch llano and occasional fire-breather and a damned good cook, yin and yang is opposite but complimentary!"
I say unto ewe that is where the yin and yang of this team do not meet.
As you know we half two units that are light yarns away from being the same in talent.

do any of you peoples recall when the Cowboys or any other team half had this much disparity between the units? And half succeeded? I recall some teams with great offenses but lousy defense but that might half been the Canadian Football Leak or the old AFL-CIA.

I do not recall such disparity.

and let me tell ewe, boy howdy, i half sleepness nights at the shelter thinking of how far the 'Boys could go if we half a descent defense. Such a waste i know you will concur.
Holla!

As always I enjoyed your delivery but I would ask if you are pointing to your 2015 expectations or the 2014 experience? .

Back to delivery-ive always believed if you opened with a "i say i say lookahere son..." you would be appreciated by more zoners./

While I'm on board with letting Murray walk, he was a huge part of the cowboys offense last season...im not sure the disparity between the two units is as pronounced as it was in 2014.

Well, that is mein worry: that last year's "adequate" defense was an octopus illusion and it will fall on its face this year and, again, make the cowboys score 30-plus points ever game to be competitive.

Honestly, I'm not too concerned. Sure the cowboys may experience a fall off, but at least the are finally being smart with their money.
