Let's say the NFL turned into some bizarro world and decided to shake things up by making every team cut everyone but five players, and everyone else went into a draft pool to basically re-draft the entire league.

What five players would you keep from the current Cowboys?

That would be my five. Witten and Dez are tough cuts, but these five have to be it.

I like this, and you have most of the pieces, but, Romo needs someone to throw the ball to. So, I would replace Smith, as much as it pains me but he is a rookie, and keep Witten.

Now we have a QB, a pass catcher, a runner, and two defenders.

+1. The only other people I think could even be considered would be Witten and Dez (as mentioned above), and possibly Jenkins just because he is still relatively young.

Romo and Ware are no brainers. You can't let go of Tyron. He's your future along the OL. Lee can be your defensive leader for the future. I choose Dez over Murray because I think Dez has a higher ceiling and also it's easier to find a productive running back than it is an elite WR.

True, but I think WRs will be high among the positions not kept by most teams.

And that's my logic.

I feel like I'm showing the ultimate disrespect to Witten but he's older and a TE. If I can only keep 5 he, sadly, isn't in consideration.

This is exactly what I was thinking as well. There are a lot of high quality WRs in the league but not many workhorse type backs, and I think Murray is going to be that kind of a back.

That's true...and also, I would keep Miles over Dez if he couild just stay healthy.

It pains me as well because Witten has been my favorite Cowboy since entering the league.

Ware, Romo, Tyron are the no brainers. Lee and Dez mainly because of their youth. You want people you think you have 5 top years left. Witten, the Rat, do not probably have that. Jenkins if he had been consistently top grade would be one but he has not been. Frankly no one else comes close. I agree that Dez before Murray because you can find top backs easier then top WRs. Miles does not make it because he frankly gets injured too much.

Romo
Ware
Witten (old, yes, but Romo and this team NEED him)
Tyron
Dez

As noted, it's easier to find a solid 1200 yard runner than a top shelf receiver. Considering our line, I'd rather give the weapons to Romo and get a serviceable back.
