Young Folks admit it....

Clipping is a dirty play...usually used by Linemen.

It's legal within 3 yards of the LOS. So long as a player is not engaged, you can clip another player within the LOS zone.

I remember when the Broncos played this way, everybody called them dirty players.

I always referred to what they did as a chop block.

I went to a HS game a couple of years ago and they were still calling it "clipping". Wonder if a lot of high schools still use that term.
I'm in high school and we use it; clipping and blocking in the back are interchangeable, didn't think either one was "old timey" or anything

A chop block is a block applied to another player from behind and at the knees, at the line of scrimmage. That's illegal. A cut block is a block applied to a player from the side, at the knees. That is legal, so long as the player is not engaged by another player.

ABQ schooling us all. Thanks.

BITB

LOL look that up on urbandictionary.com

Thats what I thought the first time I saw it in this thread. Ive never heard the acronym used for block in the back, always for the urbandictionary definition.

At one point in the game one of the refs actually called "offsides". Call me old school, but calling "encroachment" drives me nuts.

They were dirty players. The 49ers in the 80's were maybe even worse with all the leg whipping they used to do.

I'm 21 and I've never gotten the gist of clipping or illegal BITB. I'd have to see a couple of examples on tape to get what it really looks like.

I was called for one in High School. He intentionally went after my teammates knees the previous play cause we were whooping them by 40, so no one seemed to care in the film room the next day.

Good Times.

It's a block at or below the waist to a non-ball carrier. It does not have to be from behind the player. An illegal block in the back is not the same thing as that can occur above the waist.

Clipping is illegal and carries a 15 yard penalty because it poses a serious injury risk. Illegal Block in the back is illegal because the player is not in position to make a play. Blocking from behind is considered a bush league play and I believe only carries a 10 yard penalty. Sort of like holding is considered bush league. Players use it when they aren't in position to make the play they are supposed to make.

When the ref called clipping you guys didnt know what the heck that was. hahaha:laugh1:

Apparently the refs didn't either because that was a block in the back not a clip.
