Give me your pick as this years David Beuhler. You know the guy that absolutely has no business on the 53-man roster, but somehow Jerry will justify his roster spot! Parcells used to refer to these guys to a certain extent as Progress-stoppers. Ill never forgive JJ for carrying 2 kickers and not using one of those spots to develop ANYONE!

My pick: Tanner with McCray a close 2nd
I've seen him for 3 years now and know what he is and thats JAG! I'd rather see us carry Tanney, Heath, Johnson or anyone in the CFL to develop over him. He'll never be an elite level RB or garner much PT with Murray, Dunbar and Randle. Don't give me that ST stuff either, he's a marginal ST player on an 8-8 team as a 4th RB. We can get a better player on the roster and it doesn't have to be a RB.

I disagree. I think Tanner is a solid back that would be more reliable to lean on when DeMarco Murray gets hurt.

Dunbar isn't a workhorse type of back and Randle is a rookie. I don't like trusting rookie RBs in pass protection.

Randle might be fine carrying the ball, but he could get Romo killed. Tanner at least has had time to learn blocking assignments.

I agree. He will never be spectacular but he can get the job done. He is a tough runner who goes only one speed. Heck, the guy ran for 500 yards in one game in high school. That's unreal!

I didn't know that. That's disgusting.

I will see your picks of Tanner and McCray and raise with Arkin, Bell and Allen.

I personally don't think Beuhler was a progress stopper. JMO, but a progress stopper is more along the lines of Roy Williams (WR not SS), who slowed the progress of both Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.

Sign a street vet as your 4th string RB in that case. They drafted Randle for a reason and if they are worried about a rookie getting Romo killed, they might want to start 4 different OL that are essentially rookies at their position. Leary Fred Free and Parnell have never started a game at their position in the NFL and we're worried about a 4th string RB getting Romo killed?!

I don't think Tanner is the 4th string RB. I'd give him the edge over Randle, which screams to me that the Cowboys carry 4RBs.

Hell, you can practically line Murray or Dunbar up out wide.

I see where you are coming from, but in Beuhler's case (a 2nd string KO specialist) he took a valuable spot to that could have been used on the next Miles or next anyone.

i agree. a guy on the bottom of the roster is not stopping anyones progress. that guy playing and keeping a better player on the bench is the one who is stopping progress

a progress stopper? perhaps Orton if you like Tanney enough, despite him being cut...perhaps if Orton wasn't there plodding along and keeping free money for doing nothing, then Tanney gets his shot (IMO, we need Orton)

Supposedly Tanney has been cut.

IMO not a big loss.

To say that Beuhler wasn't a progress stopper because he wasn't holding another kicker back (his position) is disingenuous. If we kept two Kickers this year, would that 2nd kicker not hurt the potential development of a cut guy like Tanney or potentially Heath? He is a progress stopper because he took valuable practice time from a potential future contributor.

That's just it, Beuhler didn't play.

So who did we cut while he was here that ended up being good?

To me calling him a progress stopper is disingenuous because we have the knowledge that no one we cut really amounted to anything. You could argue Danny Amendola, but considering no one scooped him off our practice squad (he chose at the end of the season to sign on Philly's PS), I'd say I'd say Beuhler didn't actually stop anyone's progress.

Now imagine if Roy Williams wasn't traded for. Ignoring what we could've done with the draft picks, Miles Austin would have gotten a look sooner and maybe we promote Amendola from the practice squad.
