What are your thoughts on the off season so far?

I do not have a favorable opinion so far.

Gregory suspension, this hurts, it changes the entire outlook on FA and the draft.
Rumors of Hardy not returning, as this goes along with the issue involving Gregory, which in return, possibly brings back Mincey. Which at this point I was and still am ready to move on from him.
All 3 players impact the DE position, and if they do not / can not address this situation in FA, then they turn to the draft. Which means another position will get set aside.

This crap back and forth on Romo having surgery, just get it done or do not do it. I have a bad feeling, it will be done, but at the time where he misses yet another OTA session as well as mini camp.
Lawrence, back surgery, worse than expected. SHOULD be ready for TC...well, we been there before on many players...he will start on PUP or be limited throughout TC.

Then there is the...will they do the right thing in the draft...draft a future franchise QB...but with the above issues, this changes the philosophy...I hope not...

Only thing seems to be positive, is supposedly Dez is doing just fine.

I am ready for some good news....dang...

No good or bad feelings, Outside of Gregory issue. FA has not started so not much to fret over. As for Romo, he is making an informed decision on what is best for him to help try and avoid a repeat of this injury. His taking time now is not going to hurt anything.

So far? Sucks with the Gregory suspension, but that's the only negative.
Too early to worry about D-Law's injury.
Don't mind if Romo misses practice. He knows the offense, and unless we bring in a bunch of receivers, he has timing down with the guys on the roster, sans Butler.

Only thing that this offseason has shown is that we don't have any reliable players at DE going into FA, except for Lawrence*. Crazy considering the high most of us left going into last year with Hardy, Law, Gregory(STEAL!!!) and Mincey.

*Even then, Lawrence has a short resume.

Not really disappointed with Gregory suspension as the Cowboys have known it was going to happen for some time. They knew that he had failed multiple tests so have to be an idiot not to think there wouldn't be a suspension.

Free agency should be interesting and it appears Stephen Jones has learned the mastery of smoke and mirrors with the comments about no decision on Hardy, with RGIII not a fit, and so on. We really won't know anything until we see who they are actually trying to sign come March 9th. Betting the Hardy decision is solely about who they target in free agency and if they get the guys they want, if they don't then it wouldn't surprise me to see them resign him on a one year deal, same for McClain.

The same is going to happen over the next month on potential draft picks with the exception that whoever comes to visit will stand a chance of being drafted by the Boys.

I'm with you. The news we have been getting hasn't been good. From the Gregory suspension, the word on Lawrence's back surgery, or rumors of Hardy not being back, it seems all we're getting is bad news.

I agree with what you say. Romo missing OTA's and Mini Camps is absolutely no big deal, as he probably wouldn't do much in them anyways since we'll very likely have new QB's via FA and/or draft that will need the bulk of that work.

-Not resigning Hardy a very good move. Time to move on.
-The Gregory suspension was pretty bad. The real hope for this defense going into next year was that Gregory could round into form and be the pass rushing devil we all hoped. With Lawrence playing great and Gregory coming on on the other side it could be a tandem for the next 5 or 6 years. Alas, it looks that may be a pipe dream now. (Pun intended)

I think we all know the Defense must play well in order for us to have any chance of being a real threat. The Gregory blow is about as bad as it gets for any hope there. Pass rush is now our weakest area.

In summary, I would give the off season up to this point an D-. The only reason it is not an F is because we have the 4th overall pick.

Still a long way for more bad things to drop.

I am just hoping for a good FA period and draft.

They don't have to be stellar...this team has beat me down so much that I will take a solid meat and potatoes kind of FA and draft and anything above it will be the proverbial icing on the cake.

Jerry was unhappy and in disbelief that the coaching staff only won one game with a backup QB, then did nothing about it.

My first and biggest opinion is that while 2015 was brutal and definitely exposed some weaknesses on this team, people need to pump the brakes just a little bit. I've never been a fan of Garrett or Linehan and this team needs an infusion of talent, but they're closet o the 12-4 team, than the 4-12 version.

On offense, we need to continue to evolve and learn to exploit matchups. People can talk about having super stars at every position, but this isn't Madden. Very few teams have that and those that do rarely win it all. What the offense needs is a strong identity and an ability to adapt on the fly. I believe we have plenty of receiving options with Dez, Williams, Beasley, Whitehead and Butler, but a little more speed at the position couldn't hurt. At TE, we need to find out of Swaim is the future. If not we need to really focus on the future after Witten. Can Free prove everyone wrong for another year? I wouldn't count on it. Even if Green is fully rehabbed, we need to grab another OT in the draft or FA.

On defense, just find a damn identity. If you want to play zone and rush the passer, then get those guys. Get rid off all the man-to-man guys and bring in people who fit the scheme. Let the DL pin their ears back and let the back seven fly to the ball. If you want to be a little more exotic with the one high and blitz, then DO IT. The passive aggressive blitzing serves no purpose. Either marry yourself to it and build accordingly, or get off it. Tackle. Tackle. Tackle. Swarm, like we did in 2014. Start going after the ball, causing fumbles--this is greatly added by swarming. Either Hitchens, a rookie or a FA gets the MLB gig. I'm done with McClain. It sets a terrible precedent for the team that he continues to get the snaps at MLB. Figure out where Byron Jones' future is and leave the kid there. He is the lone bright light in the secondary and has the potential to be a star, but the team needs to put him somewhere and let him grow into it. Church is no longer and every down guy. Get another SS in here who can play the cover downs and add versatility.

Gregory suspension really doesn't change much. Everyone said he was purely a situational rusher and wouldn't do much, no one was relying on the kid until he got suspended. Suddenly now he was the hinge pin for the pass rush. Get over it. He slipped to the second for a reason. It's disappointing, but piling on is just asinine. The DL had to be addressed either way. Gregory's suspension doesn't effect Hardy one bit--he's gone.

For the love of god, get a new special teams coach. Hell, let Dan Bailey coach special teams. The guy is the Golden Goose. Do SOMETHING, anything to shore up a unit that's been abysmal in coverage and returns.

For my money, 2016 is make or break for Garrett and company. Anything but a playoff win and he should be shown the door.

Until after free agency and the draft there is no way to judge anything

You can even go a little further and say that you can't really make a judgement until the season starts. I remember the 2014 offseason being one of the worst I can remember from recent memory. Romo had a much worse injury, we cut Ware, lost Hatcher and didn't have the money to sign anyone else really significant. I am usually a pretty optimistic fan but for the first time, I had no hope going into that season...and we finished 12-4 so you never really know.
