I'm going with Private Joker from Full Metal Jacket. I love the whole duality of man thing,

(Born to Kill / Peace Sign)

Joker was great, but Ermy was gold in that. Animal Mother gets a nod too.

An unsung forgotten is Kirk Douglas as Colonel Dax in Paths to Glory. Excellent movie, great role..

George C. Scott - Patton. I guess that may not qualify since it is biographical...

Screw that... It counts.

The best ones are the real ones anyway...That's why I liked the Band of Brothers character so much.

Not really a military character but a character that was kind of pushed into a duty to help the military.

Carey Grant in Father Goose.

The scene with the fish always cracks me up...

[catching a fish barehanded. A fish swims toward them]
Walter Eckland: [In a hushed voice] Hey, here she comes again.
Catherine Freneau: How do you know it's a "she"?
Walter Eckland: Her mouth is open, now be quiet.

Col. Robert E. Hogan - Hogan's Heroes.

A comedy, but I guess it counts.

Also Mel Gibson - Lt. Col. Hal Moore - We Were Soldiers

Try IEDs.

But my fave is Gunny Emil Foley from An Officer And A Gentleman.

Tom Hanks in forest Gump.

He was a hero and a guy that lived a crazy life without much want in the world besides a girl that he loved.

He gave almost everything he had away and got shot saving 5-6 guys lives.
