Your OTA absence roundup
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on May 17, 2010 1:14 PM ET
A dozen NFL teams kick off OTAs Monday, so news should pick up this week from sssslow week to sorta slow.

We don't want to get hysterical over absences at OTAs. After all, the events are voluntary and many players will miss a handful of practices for good reasons.

For that reason, we'll include all the early absences in one post instead of dragging the news out and giving it more importance than is merited. Here goes:

Tampa Bay: Kellen Winslow, Derrick Ward, left tackle Donald Penn, and guard Davin Joseph are all absent, according to Pewter Report. Penn's absence was expected; he's in a contract standoff. Joseph recently underwent surgery.

Dallas: Marcus Spears, who has signed his restricted free agent tender, was not in attendance. Patrick Crayton was a no-show, as expected. Tony Romo was there in favor of Byron Nelson Classic.

Denver: DJ Williams and Jamal Williams are out for Denver. Unsigned restricted free agent Elvis Dumervil is on the field.

Kansas City: The Chiefs have perfect attendance except for unsigned restricted free agent Jarrad Page.

Not sure what excuse Spears has? I can understand Caryton situation

What'd they do, schedule his tee time in conflict with the OTAs?

His tee time was 9 something this morning nothing they could do. Tony though he true to his statement that if the tee time interfered with OTA he would just pass on trying to qualify. I would hope this changes a few minds out there about the importance Romo puts on his job.

Golf might be fun, but I bet that even Romo would rather be out there throwing the ball around with the boys instead of on the course.

Again, this is how i feel, when its cowboys practices, nothing else should take away from that practice time with the players. I salute the way romo has repeatedly said he would not let anything interfere with cowboys practices.

Yet, he is the leader of this team. He has to take a stance and lead by example that nothing else is important except practices and getting the team ready. Romo makes what 8 to 9 million a year for being the cowboys star qb?

I understand what your saying about golf tuning up romo's skills hostile. Yet, to me Romo's number one passion and his only passion during days of mini camp, ota, should be the dallas cowboys and nothing else. He should have that burning desire, *and he has started showing this* is dallas cowboys, nothing else during those practice times.

On his off days, or weekends he can do whatever he wants, thats his time, and its no body's elses business. BUT, he reflects the dallas cowboys, whatever he does, so he has to be aware of that, just like big ben in pittsburgh is finding out now.

Finally to me, Romo's passion and he is showing that leadership now, to be the best, and to win championships and super bowls for the dallas cowboys.

Nothing else matters, but win baby! Win!

It is his job. Romo loves playing golf but Golf does not pay his bills.

Great because when he trys to qualify for the US Open that should not be a big deal for us since he in no way interfers with his job as the QB of this team. He gives what he has to this team outside of that is his life and if trying to qualify for something like the US open is what he wants to do then good luck to him

Bingo! Exactly romo is paid mega bucks to be the leader of the dallas cowboys! He is doing that!

Lets dont get sidetracked here on my views, or hostiles views or dc's on golf and romo. Lets just enjoy this leadership that romo is stepping into, and hopefully becoming a champion like roger staubach and troy aikman were as QBs for the dallas cowboys! Thats the main thing, win baby win, and be a champion.

He was scheduled around 10am. Good decision by Romo. Poor decision by the tourney people. I wonder if any Dallas brass but a bug in the tourney directors ear to make sure Romo was here for OTA's.

That i will gladly second, his own time is his own, none of my business or anyone elses. But come dallas cowboys practices, OTAs, extra time after practice with the wrs, rbs, te's, mini camp, training camp and the season, then thats dallas cowboys time, nothing else!

When it comes to the Cowboys you are right so then him attempting to qualify of the US Open is not a big deal correct?

Yea I wonder what's up with him, he hasn't been injured or anything I don't think. Maybe doing some charity thing? Or trying to pressure them into giving him a contract?

They did the best they could and tried to give Tony the last tee time but that still did not work out.

It won't unfortunately.

They couldn't adjust the tee time to this afternoon? That sucks.

I don't know. Not sure if he told the coaches he would not be in or not. All I know is evidently he did not show. I know I will get hit with the it is not mandatory from some but it should not have to be mandatory for a guy to come in and do his job. I understand Crayton situation is different but as far as I know Dallas is not looking to trade Spears nor has granted him permission to seek a trade as they did Crayton.

They have to do what is best for the entire field not just one. They did give Tony the lastest they had it just was not in the cards.

Maybe you should pay attention to a bunch of us who have been telling you for months now that what you are pissing and moaning about above is his number one priority. From all evidence in this thread once again a stupid agenda against the man has been shot to hell.

There were no afternoon tee times?

That has to be a first.
