Your observations, opinions, questions?
Here is my week one jazz:
-- With Brett Favre missing two of his best offensive linemen this year, that defense not getting any better, and the Favre man himself talking retirement, it was pretty clear he wasn't going to last much longer. Now that Javon Walker is out for the year and the Packer struggle to put up any points against the lowly Lions (Yes, I know they've improved, but it's still the Lions!) in week one, I think it's time to say your good-byes. Favre is in danger of going out like Aikman did, only his body will stay together longer, making the final years that much more sad to witness.
-- Wow, maybe Randy Moss does matter! If you watched that Vikings/Buccs game, Culpepper spent a lot of time scrambling, trying to find ANYONE who was open. But don't give up on the Vikes yet, because a lot of those problems yesterday came from a terrible offensive line, something the Vikes usually aren't known for in recent years.
-- We saw the Cards play the Cowboys in the preseason. They weren't that impressive. I think we can hush the "Cards are this year's sleeper" and "Kurt Warner may be back to his greatest show on turf years again with those receivers" hoorahs just a wee but until they prove more. Dennis Green is improving the Cards, and it's only week one, but the Giants made them look silly.
-- Speaking of sleepers, I don't really consider the Cards a sleeper teams anyways, since everyone has made them their darling. How about the Buccs as a sleeper team this year? Their offense wasn't too shabby at all and the defense may never match those years of Sapp-Lynch-Brooks-Barber-Rice and company, but a lot of those players are stil there, and the Buccs coaching staff swears that McFarland is going to have a career year this season if he can finally stay healthy. Again, hard to judge with week one, but the Buccs looked much better than advertised yesterday.
-- Can someone tell me what Mike Shanahan was thinking when he got rid of Brian Griese and replaced him with Jake Plummer and a fat multi-million dollar contract? Maybe you get spoiled after starting one of the greatest QBs ever to play the game, even at the end of his career, in Jon Elway. But after watching Jake Plummer, and then Griese on the Buccs, I don't know what exactly they improved at other than those play action rollouts that Shanahan loves to call with Plummer. This has to be Shanahan's last year in Denver. They're grasping at straws by bringing in the Cleveland defense and trying out some 3-4 action. They blew that draft pick with Maurice Clarett. Further proof that if you get lucky and have the right talent (like one of the best running backs in the league drafted in the 6th round!), any coach looks like a genius. It's time for a fresh start in Denver if Shanahan once again disappoints this year.
-- I hope he's just hurt because otherwise, David Carr is in danger of approaching 1st overall pick bust status. He looked bad in the preseason and he looked awful in week one. When J.P. Losman in his first career start is making you look like you have no business on the field, you know your career is in jeopardy. Serves the Texans right. You bastids got your first win ever against the Cowboys, but we have the last laugh. Our team is going places and your ship is sinking fast!
-- The Pats spanked Oakland with a 4-man line insted of their usual 3-4 in week one, which just goes to prove that all this 4-3 vs. 3-4 crap in the offseason on the Zone has been useless and in the end, it's the players, not the scheme. If anything, the only folks who can talk are those who were yelling and screaming about how fun it was going to be with a defense so deep, we could change it at will. With our front seven containing enough talented depth, we can do whatever the situation requires, just like the Pats. Here's hoping our young guys learn as fast as those Pats players.
-- Has everyone seen the Tom Brady and his offensive line credit card commercial? One of the funniest football commercials I've seen in a while. :laugh2:
So what are your thoughts on week one?
