- Well…let’s start with the obvious in Jason Garrett. I think he’s done a good job this year and I’ve stuck up for him in the past. But, he really did us in with horrible playcalling and it makes me wonder if he is reverting to his old, pass-heavy ways or maybe he’s not doing that, but he will always have that tendency to return to a pass heavy playcalling in very important and tough games.

- What killed me and I believe it was on the 2nd field goal Bailey made was we started moving the ball nicely with a mix of run and pass with Romo under center. Then we get down to the 20 yard line of Arizona and on 1st and 10…we call a shotgun formation. The Cardinals *know* we are going to pass, go full bore at Romo and get the sack. Now it’s 2nd and 17.

- Where our use of the shotgun really kills us is that it almost guarantees to take away big plays in the passing game. Thus, when we are in the shotgun, we are now a dink and dunk passing offense.

- I would also think that Garrett would want to protect his QB, who was lost for ½ of last season and not too long ago suffered a punctured lung. Typically, keeping a balanced attack on offense and running the ball more will mean that the QB gets hit less.

- I hope we understand the type of player that Felix is and that can be of value for us. He’s a screen and swing pass tailback who is good for about 8 runs a game and is a very good kickoff returner.

- I do think that Felix is the guy you need at kickoff returns because I think with the kickoffs being moved forward, teams don’t want to just take touchbacks. I think that the new style of kickoff returners has to be more shifty than straight line and fast.

- Free was awful out there. It’s too bad because outside of 2 other games, he’s played quite well this season. I just think he’s the type that cannot quite handle elite pass rushers for an entire game.

- In another post I stated that I think our #1 need in the offseason was actually at CB. Now we sorta see why. Newman is more or less a solid zone coverage cornerback. The Cardinals were targeting him quite a bit and he’s simply not worth his salary. But, we can’t just go with Frank Walker or Alan Ball at the #3 CB position. We’ll need to look seriously at CB either in free agency or the first or 2nd round of the draft.

- Sean Lissemore is looking like a beast. He looks like one of those guys that most people never heard of that quietly develops into a borderline Pro-Bowl talent.

- A disappointing loss for sure. Although if there is a silver lining it’s that we have seemingly rid ourselves of those gut wrenching and improbable losses where we completely beat ourselves (i.e. Jets and Lions games) and now we tend to lose tough games that are more ‘normal’ in the manner that they happen. And we still have to remember a couple of things…1) it becomes more difficult to win on the road come mid-November. 2) We still have a 1 game lead on the division.

As far as Garrett goes, I’m probably in the ‘moderately worried’ stage which is below the ‘very worried’ and ‘extremely worried’ stage and far from the ‘accepting the fact he’s not the right coach for us’ stage. Hopefully he’ll turn it around next week.

Not to beat a dead horse, but Garrett will be fine as HC as soon as Jerry Jones makes the proper decision to hire an OC. If Garrett insists on maintaining total control over the offense, then I think we should look elsewhere for a HC. It's obvious he can't handle both.

good post overall YR but if you think the way we lost this game was anything approaching "normal" you are out of your mind

the team did not play great but good enough to scrape by with a win

garrett lost us this game single-handedly

Man I wish I could remember who was arguing with me when I told them that Sean Lissemore is the kind of guy that could develop into something.

How good was he yesterday? Man..

Not sure how accurate this is but the Ticket reported several weeks ago that Jerry prefers his HC to be a coordinator. I'm sure Garrett is not complaining about the arrangement but the events at the end of the game (which I did not watch) would lead us to believe that Garrett was not fully aware of the situation due to his coordinator responsibilities.

The playcalling at the end was awful. Even if you want to kick a FG, why not use the TO (which gives you a full minute + to get ready )instead of spking the ball (which gives you 35 seconds). The excuses after the game were even worse. I have lost the respect for Jason Garret.

On the plus side, Mike Jenkins played a solid game and J. Holley catches everything he was thrown to.

Garrett didn't lose us the game single handedly. I didn't have a problem with the timeout before the final Bailey kick...although it is something I would go over with Bailey first.

I think that it is actually smart for the coach to do that with the kicker. Mainly because you are giving the kicker a mulligan. Let's say the wind is blowing and the kicker gets the mulligan. If he misses the mulligan, now he can gauge the wind better. If he makes the makes the mulligan he already has the correct gauge of the wind. I think the same happens with technique as well. Unfortunately, the second kick by Bailey was poor.

That being said, I thought the use of timeouts by Garrett was awful. Still, we had problems elsewhere like Free playing poorly, IMO a bad call on the Scandrick block in the back (to me, a block requires either hands or a player shooting down at the opponents legs), along with Newman getting eaten alive.

To me, OT losses on the road in December, happen. Those gut wrenching losses like being up 24 points on the Lions in the 3rd quater, blowing a 10 point lead on the Jets or a few years ago where we lost to the Commanders after they blocked a last second kick and got a face mask penalty and then booted a 50-yarder to beat us...in regulation. THOSE are bizarre, gut wrenching losses.

Garrett didn't single handedly lose us the game, but his playcalling was poor and it has to get better.

How good was he yesterday? Man..

Good burst and plays with a high motor. The guy was a track guy and it seems like he can handle the weight he's added.

A little love for Danny McCray. Dude was all over the field in limited action.

LSU product.

Me too. He brings contact to the carpet. I love that...:starspin

Good post as usual, YR. Some questions, though.

- I know you're against the shotgun in certain situations, but I see other teams use the shotgun in similar situations with better results. Do you think it's the formation itself, or more the personell we have and the plays we run out of it?

- I didn't notice Lissemore a whole lot yesterday, but it's great to hear he was doing so well. What do you see as his role for this team in the future?

- Do you think Norv would come next year as an offensive assistant? I know Jones doesn't want an actual OC (stupid), but do you think bringing in Norv as someone to help put game plans together and advise during games would work?

- Next April, say we have a CB, OL, and OLB rated basically the same, and all three are available when we pick. You love all three players, and need all three. Which one do you go with? I know there are a lot of other variables to consider, but just on the face of it right now, which would you take?

- Are you in the camp of eventually switching Free and Smith?

- A lot of people were on here calling for more screens to counter the blitzes. Whereas I tend to agree with that approach, my thinking is that our interior OL doesn't move well enough to make screens effective. Do you agree?

Yakuza...I know you were disappointed. But good workup....:starspin

Allow me to add to the discussion:

On Garrett. His tendencies sometimes become the functional element that have to be tweaked by himself. That takes experience at the top, and just isn't gained through a support role. He established tempo, and principals to apply six seconds and clear. Well, that's exactly what happened prior to the icing incident. Another coach felt that parameters were being pressed, and knee jerk was to attempt to abort. Well, in the field, a Commander has to instill responsiveness and accountability to overcome the emergency of a specific situation. There, it is survival, in athletics, it still functions, but more low keyed.

Here, Garrett responded to faith in his subordinates...his coach. Now, that faith has to reach the field and demand such responsible response by the players...but leave some of the game in their very hands. It is their ability to make plays that makes a winner to begin with.

Positives:

Penalties declined somewhat.
NO turnovers.

Thanks again for your thoughts....:star:

Romo should have thrown the ball away on that second down play. Nothing open and he tried to keep the play alive, if he throws that ball away we still have one more shot in a reasonable distance.

I think it's a bit of both. I think other teams that do well from it when they use it on 2nd down, could possibly do even better without it. If you're the '08 Cardinals and you have some really great WR's and *no* running game and you are forced to pass a ton and have a good QB (Warner), then I can see using the shotgun a lot.

The problem for the Cowboys is that we become a dink-n-dunk passing team. It's like we turn guys like Dez, Laurent, and Miles into Joe Jurevicius, Wayne Chrebet and Bobby Engram. Even if Murray isn't running well, we can still use him to our advantage as a guy possibly going to run the ball or use the play action.

If I had to run things, I would tell both Romo and Garrett that I don't want any shotgun formations unless it's an absolute passing down (3rd and more than 3 or 2nd and 17, etc).

- I didn't notice Lissemore a whole lot yesterday, but it's great to hear he was doing so well. What do you see as his role for this team in the future?

Hopefully as a very good starting DE. It's probably what this defense needs and has been lacking. Other great 3-4's have at least 1 DE who is downright superb. We seem to be content on 'just getting bye.' I'm a little concerned that we may keep him on the bench and say 'well, he's good because he's coming off the bench.' But, with Garrett as coach, that may not be the case as he finally allowed Hatcher to start.

- Do you think Norv would come next year as an offensive assistant? I know Jones doesn't want an actual OC (stupid), but do you think bringing in Norv as someone to help put game plans together and advise during games would work?

I don't see this at all. Norv's strength is actually his playcalling. People rave about him with QB's, but his playcalling is top-notch. I remember Belichick being candid once about how difficult it is to coach against Norv's offenses because of his playcalling.

But, I don't see it happening. I think Garrett wants to playcall and I think Jerry wants that. It's not unusual...the trend is now for owners to want their HC's calling the plays. You have to remember...if you get a coordinator who calls the plays and he goes elsewhere, it can cause you to scramble around more than you would like.

- Next April, say we have a CB, OL, and OLB rated basically the same, and all three are available when we pick. You love all three players, and need all three. Which one do you go with? I know there are a lot of other variables to consider, but just on the face of it right now, which would you take?

No question...cornerback. Essentially, the NFL is setup where you have to improve your weaknesses from year to year. And what typically happens is that a weakness becomes better, while a strength becomes worse. But, teams take a long time to finally catch up to that. We really need a CB. Newman can't go anymore and is paid way too much. Jenkins and Scandrick are decent, but Ball and Walker aren't the answers.

- Are you in the camp of eventually switching Free and Smith?

For the most part, yes. Although I think Free is much better than given credit for. I just think that Smith is such an elite talent than if he can improve his hand technique and drive blocking, he'll be a top-5 LT and Free can be a top-5 RT.

- A lot of people were on here calling for more screens to counter the blitzes. Whereas I tend to agree with that approach, my thinking is that our interior OL doesn't move well enough to make screens effective. Do you agree?

Well we did do that. But, it helps if Felix can locate the ball. I do think we really need Miles back. He makes it harder for teams to blitz us.

YR

I'll go back and watch Free, because I didn't notice him playing awful under the circumstance (ie, given who he was up against).

Re: not running a more balanced attack this week, I don't get that criticism at all. I'd have thrown against those fronts all day, too. What surprises me is what a job they did singled up on our WRs, and how effectively they were able to bottle up Jason Witten.

I also am surprised we didn't do a better job with their blitzes. We had blitzers coming in untouched on at least two of those sacks. It was like a flashback to 2008 out there yesterday. Frustrating.
