- I’m a fan of the moves we made on the O-Line. I think Blogging the Boys brought up a good point about the 2004 Chargers O-Line under Houck, who went to a youth movement starting two rookies (one of which was a 7th round pick who started at right tackle).

- I don’t hate Gurode, I just was not in love with him as a center. He was good for about 2-3 stinkers a year and to me that’s an issue when it’s your center who touches the ball every snap. Furthermore, he didn’t call the line adjustments.

- I think much of it is just another case of ‘fans of hating Jerry Jones’ rearing their ugly heads again. We’ve got people questioning how Andre Gurode was treated because he made the trip to Minny and was cut later on? Seriously? You act like he’s not a multi-millionaire and he had to pay for his own travel. Cry for the guys who make a lot less money and lose their job because of the economy.

- I’m actually happy, borderline thrilled the Eagles signed Vick to a big deal. I think people lose sight that this is a guy that may have given up dog fighting, but the rest of him probably hasn’t changed much from the last time he was given a gazillion dollars by the Falcons. I mean, it’s not too long ago that people were buying Ron Mexico jerseys. Combine that with the fact he’s never consistently beat teams in the pocket, he’s injury prone and north of 30…I think it’s a positive for the Cowboys.

- I think what I like about the ‘new’ O-Line is that we are not one dimensional anymore. The ‘old’ O-Line often struggled with speed rushers and couldn’t do much in the way of pulling or screens. Obviously, an Alex Gibbs type O-Line tends to be too small and be one dimensional in the other direction. But, we also had an issue with the O-Line wearing down as the season went along. I don’t think we have that this year.

- I think right now it’s pretty obvious, if this team wants to make the playoffs, the offense will have to carry them early on.

- I do believe we have the best ‘skill positions’ out of 12 personnel as a whole. Romo, Felix, Witten, Bennett/Phillips, Miles and Dez…that’s pretty darn good IMO.

- I think a big key for us is to get Jason Witten going early. He seems to get off to some slow starts although I think it’s partially due to the O-Line over the years. I think he’s a guy that needs to get going early and open things up for Dez and Miles. Then when they focus on him underneath, send him on deeper pass patterns. I honestly believe that this is *huge* for us.

- I’ve gotta say, this is the most optimistic I’ve been about this team in a long, long time. I don’t understand why other ‘fans’ seem to go out of their way to chastise fans for being optimistic about their team. This ain’t baseball, parity is rampant in this league every single season.

Anyway, I just like the way the organization is being run. I think the concept of ‘the best players will play’ is a simple one, but usually ignored in the world of big money contracts and timid coaches. I think all of those player practices Romo had will pay off. I think Mike Woicik will make a difference, even with the lockout. I think Romo heard the players liking Kitna’s fiery leadership…and I think that has put some fire in the belly.

I think Felix is…going to be sick. I think the players are dying to play for Rob Ryan and I actually think he’s going to be here in 2012. I think Dez, Miles and Witten are going to be extremely tough to defend. And I think we are due for some good breaks to come our way.

To me, that’s one of the big things that separate football from other sports. With football, there is a lot of unknown going on because there are things like ‘assignments’ and ‘responsibilities’ and how if somebody fails their assignment or responsibility…it can make a great player look like a poor player.

We don’t really deal with that in baseball or basketball or even hockey.

With that, football often times becomes about the feel a fan has for the team. I don’t think anybody can quite predict the success a team will have that season. But, I think one can get a feel for how the organization and team is being run.

My feel tells me that we are close to nirvana. We are close to the other fans of other teams being jealous really soon.

Good stuff YR. I enjoy your meaningless thoughts threads.

The thing i like most about Garrett is the competition at all positions, it makes everybody better. I share your optimism for this team!

Great post

Just one tidbit - my initial reaction was the exact same as yours regarding the Vick deal..however, the reality is, 35M or so of the close to 40M in guaranteed money will be paid between this year and next. So the eagles aren't on the hook longterm with Vick. Just next year. Kind of sucks. I also agree that he's not worth the $$$

YR, that was a good one put together. I don't have to ask if you are anxious to watch some Cowboy football this season...and that's great.:starspin

Green Day has a song that I love called "Wake Me Up When September Ends."

For those of us who are football junkies, it's just the opposite, wake us up when September gets here.

Nice wake up call.

Indeed. This season feels like it can lead to something good, whether it is all the way to the super bowl (I am not that optimistic) or a couple of more playoff victories (more likely), I am completely stoked.

Good thread.

I think the offense is going to be gang-busters.

The defense is a big ? for me.

Even if it doesn't lead to a couple of more playoff victories, I'm glad football is back. One more week!!

I understand that and knew that as well. Obviously...a $100 million contract in the NFL is not usually a legit $100 million deal.

That being said, I believe he can implode by December.

I believe a leopard can change their spots, but the majority of the time it's not the case.

I am optimistic when I see some of the moves JG has made. He saw what we all saw on the OL. Now lets see if next year we draft a huge NT.

If he's even playing in December. He might get knocked out long before then.

I think Philly made a mistake re-signing Vick to such a deal. I really think that last year was a mirage, because teams didn't reall think he would be playing much and didn't plan for him very much. By the end of the year, Vick was not very spectacular, and didn't do much. Def. Coordinators had film of him and figured out how to stop him.

With the off-season, coaches were able to watch film and now know how to defense Vick. Plus their O-Line is not very good. I really beleive that vince Young will be running the show by mid season.

To me Philly is not the biggest concern in the east. I think the biggest threat to the Cowboiys this year is the Cowboys. If they can take care of business and play with urgency from the opening kick off, then we should be alright. Barring injuries to kep personnel, we should be able to play with anyone.

Just the opposite could also be "Go to sleep when Septemeber ends". I prefer your version of "just the opposite". ;)

So true. I hate we have to wait to watch on Sunday night. It drives me crazy when we are the second game but Sunday night, I will be completely frazzled by then, lol.

I don't know what it was last year, but despite coming off a playoff win I was sorta grumpy going into each game of the season.

I'm talking about week 1 against the Commanders. Grumpy, untrusting, not in the mood to deal with sloppy play, etc.

Kinda that 'have your arms folded and looking surly while watching football' look.

And I've been a supporter of Wade, to a degree.

But, something didn't feel quite right from the onset of this team. I thought we'd make the playoffs again because Romo protected the ball so much better in '09 and his win-loss record is excellent.

However, things just didn't sit right with me in training camp. Hearing Jenkins basically state that he didn't have to worry about his starting position. Buehler getting no competition whatsoever. The O-Line banged up and looking a bit out of shape.

The attitude was not good.

I think it is now.

The defensive players are so much more excited to play for Rob Ryan. A guy like Jason Hatcher, who really doesn't say much or get noticed, is now a guy chomping at the bit to play. And say what you will about Dez, I appreciate the fact that he mentioned, unsolicited, that the drop pass against San Diego was 1 dropped pass too many.

Think about it, an extremely gifted player who some consider volatile, is demanding perfection from himself, even in the first quarter of a meaningless preseason game.

It's a breath of fresh air.

This was nothing but cheap shots and speculation. How exactly do you know he hasn’t changed. And what exactly are you speaking of? How can an organization signing their franchise QB be a bad move? Well, only if everything the Cowboys do is great and everything any other team does is bad. That’s how. Vick is an explosive player and the reason the Eagles kicked the Cowboys butts last year.

Read it again, he says "probably hasn't changed."
