- While I still do not think this team will make the playoffs, it’s hard to not be beaming about the victory. While there were some gaffes, the team played well. They played with intensity, discipline and when things got a little rough, they hung in there and got the job done. I actually think this was Romo’s best game since 2007. He was incredibly on point throughout the entire game. In fact, if I had to nitpick I think he was so used to not being protected that there were points in the game where he wasn’t quite himself. And when was the last time we have seen the defense get a pick to put the offense in position to kick a field goal and win the game? I was thinking about that in regulation, then Carr comes up with a BEAUTIFUL play on the ball. It’s good to see a guy who has been thru a lot, having a somewhat difficult year because he’s being asked to do things he doesn’t excel at because of the injuries, to get the big play like that.

- NBC called it in the pre-game for the Pats vs. Niners. The Lissemore sack was huge, set up by a great and gutsy playcall by Rob Ryan. They moved Spencer right near the center. Pouncey called for the O-Line to shift left to block Spencer and they never picked up Lissemore who had an easy sack. The Steelers had enough blockers for the play, they just got confused by the alignment.

- Big props to Dwayne Harris and Mike Woicik. Harris not only had a great game, but he keeps showing me that unless you’re Devin Hester, I’d rather have a punt returner with great technique and a feel for punt returning than the returner with poor technique who makes all sorts of athletic moves. But, last year there was no way Harris could have made that punt return or that big catch he made on 2nd and long. He just didn’t have the strength for it. I believe time with Woicik has really helped him get stronger and be a bigger part of the offense.

- I thought the O-Line pass protected well, but the run blocking is still lousy. The difference is obviously Murray, who has a real faculty for extending the play when there is no crease to hit thru. Even on the one sack (IIRC by Harrison) it came on a good playcall, playaction, but Phillips didn’t execute his block.

- I think it’s fairly obvious Ware is hurting. But I give him credit for turning it up down the stretch. While Spencer has played great this year, you didn’t see him become more effective until Ware started to get a good jump on the ball in the clutch.

- I think Hanna will not only replace Witten when Witten can’t go anymore, but he will be more of a Dallas Clark style type of TE.

- I do think we still have trouble with looking for Witten too often when we need a play. I thought we got into that in our final drives in regulation. Everybody knows it is coming and they’ll either double Witten or allow him to catch a pass well short of the first down.

- As far as the Josh Brent situation goes, I would not have him on the sidelines. Not because he was the driver of the car that Brown was killed in. But because he was drunk driving and could have killed somebody else. I think Brown’s family knows that Jerry Brown and Josh Brent were close friends. I also think that their view is that both were drunk and Jerry Brown got into a car with a drunk driver. Furthermore, they probably realize that the situation could have been reversed and Jerry could have been driving the car and killed Josh Brent.

- The question I have for the people who find it ‘tasteless’ is how and why does Josh Brent being on the sideline affect you and your life personally? Really *think* about it.

Now, you may have a legitimately good reason for feeling that way. Perhaps you had a family member killed by a drunk driver. But I would guess that many people have no rationale behind thinking that way like Boomer Esiason did. Quite frankly, he came off as grandstanding to me.

Like I mentioned, I wouldn’t allow him on the sidelines because he could have killed somebody completely innocent to the situation. But, acting like it makes ONLY the Cowboys ‘tasteless’ because they let him on the sidelines negates all of the tasteless teams that have had players getting DUI’s and not only were on the sidelines that week, but got to play.

All I’m really asking for is a consistency in logic instead of just shouting out meaningless platitudes. You can’t argue it was insulting the Brown family when they wanted Brent to still be a member of the team. You can’t argue that the Cowboys are the only ‘tasteless’ team when every team has had players with DUI’s getting to still play that week.

That is my issue with Boomer Esiason. It's obvious he never bothered to learn about what the Brown family wanted. And it's obvious that he never stopped to think that if that is what the Brown family wanted, how does Josh Brent being on the sidelines personally affect him.

- Anyway, next week will be another test for the team. This time, we get to see if this team can put together another good performance. While there is plenty to be proud about this team, this organization still suffers from players not knowing how to quite handle success and not being able to play consistently well, week-in and week-out.

Great summary, as usual, YR. :)

Out of curiousity, do you think the squib kick was a miss hit or a called play? If I have to question any single play call from the game, that is the one.

AS FOR BRENT AND THECOWBOYS
Its bad PR for both the cowboys and Brent the last thing Brent and The cowboys need is brent on Camera smiling on the sideline for the whole nation to see. JERRY should of had him in a both with mother to enjoy the game outside of the tv cameras, bad PR move by the cowboys support him but keep off the television imo be should be banned from all NFL games

This team has fight and plays its best with its back against hte wall. I think you're right though about this team struggling with handling success when they're ahead of that wall. But that's up to the coaching now to help them transition to handle success.

But I'm seeing some things in this team of late that are different from years past and early in the season. They are playing collectively as a team. So I don't think inconsistent play is as much of an issue because they hang togehter as a team now and overcome the inconsistent play.

This team is evolving, getting better and better, and forging an identity around resilient team play. That's to the credit of the players and the coaches.

I forgot about that one which I meant to bring up. Y'know, it would be great if the press did their jobs and asked about it. I can't see any reason whatsoever for a squib outside of thinking Bailey is the world's greatest squib kicker who can put some english on the ball and cause a fumble. And I think I would have a better chance of catching polio than that happening on purpose.

I agree with your way of handling the situation. But, bad Cowboys PR doesn't affect me. I'm not Rich Dalyrimple or Jerry Jones. It doesn't affect Norman Esiason either.

I just wouldn't allow it because I am anti-drunk driving and he could have killed somebody else whose family would have never forgiven Brent. But the same goes for the rest of the league that allows DUI offenders to still play the very week the player has a DUI. The only difference was those players didn't kill anybody...but, you can chalk that up to being lucky.

Great read as always YR.

I really disagree with best game since 2007. Come on?

As usual, I cannot even give Romo high praise without it being questioned.

Romo diehards need to get a grip.

I never said he hasn't played a good game since 2007. I just said that it was the best game I've seen him play since 2007. He was on fire.

Josh Brent being on the sideline doesn't affect me, which in turn has no affect on whether or not it was tasteless.

If this is to become another Josh Brent on the sideline thread it will be merged with the other. Either keep it on football and the game or post Brent comments in the appropriate thread.

I am more of a Romo believer. I see how he gives us a chance. I just didnt expect that from you.

No biggie. It was a good read.

Currently: gripped ;-)

I dunno if best since 2007; Romo has had plenty of games in the last few years where is was ridiculously good. He was great yesterday, but I'd have to look at 4.5 years worth of play before I made a statement like that, especially considering that I feel like Romo overall was better in 2009 and 2011 than in 2007.

That said, every pass he made was very well thrown, even the ones he didn't connect on. I agree with your statement on not being used to protection; Romo has a clock in his head that has gotten shorter and shorter since 2006 (understandably); having more than 2.5-3 seconds in the pocket is just not something he expects or is used to.

- I thought the O-Line pass protected well, but the run blocking is still lousy. The difference is obviously Murray, who has a real faculty for extending the play when there is no crease to hit thru. The biggest improvement I saw from the OL was keeping their feet. The OL usually is awful in run blocking when they get tripped up or end up on the ground. While they still didn't get amazing push or anything yesterday, at the very least they stood their ground/kept their feet. That isn't going to make you a running power house but with a slippery guy like Murray, it's enough to give him some chances.

good stuff so i'll focus on the disagreements.

harris... he was drafted for his strength and is built like a RB. i love woicek but harris has always been strong. breaking tackles and runs after catch is why he is an NFL player. he isn't all that natural of a WR tho he looks ot be developing into one. the wr coach imho deserves a lot of credit.

dez, miles, harris... dallas likes those type of receivers.

hanna... i think he will grow into a far more complete te than dallas clark. much more like witten himself. he has great speed but will probably focus largely on strength and blocking in the off-season. he is almost certainly TE2 next year.

romo... thought he was very good but nothing rare for him. a few throws were "too safe" and resulted in incompletions. a couple throws to dez were high (for a guy that really needed to body catch). and as you mention, for once he had all day to pick and choose targets and get set to throw.

What are you griping about now?

The writers all asked him and he explained it in detail calling it a power kick and said they did so because of he wind.

Oh and romo did all that while only being 6"2 who would've thunk.

Good post. Agree with a lot of what you said. I have been saying for a couple of years that Wittens targets need to be re-distributed to a more explosive player. Does not diminish Wittens greatness. Does not change how I feel about him as a player. But many of us have been calling for more Hanna and Harris all year. Harris is just so much tougher, aggressive and hungrier than Ogletree.

I disagree with you about Brent. I completely understand that Dallas does not want to abandon him. Especially in his fragile state of mind. But they can support him WITHOUT having him on the sidelines. He is there during the week. Training, working out and eating with the team. But is is an UNECESSARY distraction for what we are trying to do. We have enough to worry about/discuss...than to have to address Josh Brent's presence on the sidelines. Heck, players might spend time thinking about how they look interacting with him on the sidelines...as opposed to staying focused on the game. Simply put...we don't need it!

I didn't see it. More often than not, these questions never get asked or gone into because they are too busy asking hard hitting questions like 'does Jerry actually have a person whose job is to clean his glasses?'

I thought it was more of the same.

Of course, what I said went completely over your head. Big surprise.

I was saying that the offense doesn't quite suit Romo in part because the plays take longer to develop and the O-Line can't quite protect for it and give Romo enough room to throw. So you either need a new offensive scheme or an impeccable O-Line or a taller QB that can throw over the top of the O-Line or somebody with a Matthew Stafford type of arm who can backpedal further away from the O-Line and still fire the ball with velocity.

Your comments speak volumes about how far you head is buried in the sand when it comes to anything about Romo. When I can give him high praise and you still find fault with it, says everything we need to know.

Harris simply didn't have the strength last year. IIRC, that was one of the team's reasons for demoting him last year. He has it now. People usually talk about adjusting to the speed of the game, but I think it's just as difficult for players to adjust to the physicality of the game and having to play when they are beat up.

Yea but romo missed a wide open walk in Td to ogletree.

I think if he was taller he would have made that play.

It's all about being tall.
