- Even though the Cowboys lost last week, I did come away with more positives than negatives last week. All things considered, I thought the team looked like a top 10 team last week. The question is whether or not they can keep up the pace. I will say with Wade as HC, you'd get the feeling that they would win here, but there would be a lot of frustratingly sloppy play. That's a big part in the process for Garrett as a HC. Can we eliminate that and play a good, crisp game of football?

- I do feel pretty good about where we stand in the NFC East. The Eagles beat a team that hasn't won more than 8 games since 2003 and Vick reverted to his old ways of needing to beat teams with his legs instead of out of the pocket. The Commanders did look pretty good, although the G-Men looked decimated by injuries. However, I wasn't quite as impressed with Rex Grossman. His throws were often high and he still seems like the game moves too fast for him. That being said, the playcalling by Kyle Shanahan was masterful.

For all of the talk, even by myself, I thought Romo looked like the best NFC East QB last week. I'm not trying to get into that conversation again...just protect the freaking ball Tony...for the sake of my sanity.

- I do think we'll have to grind it out on offense because the Niners defense I think matches up pretty well with us. Getting Dez healthy is big because I can see Willis matching up with Witten. I think the key players then become Felix and John Phillips.

- I was impressed with the improvement of communication on defense. We seemed to struggle with communication all throughout preseason, but did a good job on the road against he Jets. Still, there were a few times we struggled with communication and it cost us. We need to clean up those mishaps.

- I think Rob Ryan's plan was to throw a ton of different blitzes from the secondary and to put Sean Lee on LT2. Lee can't quite cover LT2 (not many ILB's can). But I think Ryan's thoughts are that as long as it doesn't kill us, he'll take the tradeoff. This week, we've got to worry about Frank Gore.

- 2nd week in a row we face a helluva ILB. I'll take a Bart Scott on my team any day...this time we get Pat Willis.

- Probably the player I'm most interested in watching against the Niners is Mike Jenkins. I think that block by Plaxico woke him up. That being said, I'm a bit torn on that block. I think it was a legal hit, but something tells me if Dez did that to Revis, they'd throw a flag (and fine him).

- Maybe the refs actually call a penalty against the opponent this week!

- I get the feeling that Dockery is close to starting over Nagy. I think they'll hold off on it this week though. I think Nagy looked better as the Jets game went along and I think that keeps him as the starter for this week. My feeling is that on this team, with Garrett as the coach...the best players, play. No 1/2 arsing it...doesn't make a difference if it's a long time veteran or a 1st round pick or a promising rookie or whatever. The best players play. THAT will eventually get us where we want to be.

- I feel like we get a win here. I think the game will be won by 10 points or so, but it will be relatively close in nature. I think Harbaugh keeps the offense conservative for the Niners and their defense keeps the game close. Winning a pretty tough game on the road by 10 points isn't a bad thing for me, but I'm curious as to how crisp this team plays. I'm also curious as to how well this team gameplans and adjusts. I thought we did a great job there against the Jets, but it was the 1st game of the season so we had more time to prepare.

Imagined conspiracies?

Great post otherwise.

Nah.

The NFL tends to go overboard with player safety sometimes and the Jets somehow had zero penalties against them last week. Some people complain about their DB's grabbing, I was more concerned about the illegal hands to the helmet by the Jets O-line, which I saw on 4 different occasions. That to me is more of a player safety issue than DB's grabbing WR's. I could just seem Dez doing that to Cromartie and getting flagged with the league saying that he was a defenseless player.

I think SF will go with max protect and send their WRs deep and challenge the CBs. The outcome will depend on the safeties and ability of Romo to not turn the ball over. Well score some on offense, but not a ton.

Good stuff, YR. I'm curious to see if the defense can sustain last week's high level of play. I also want to see what we can do to eliminate the turnovers and get some of our own.

Re: Witten and Willis, this is going to be a great matchup. I'm going to come out and say that, though he hasn't had the opportunities to prove it yet, and I know this is a mouthful, Phillips looks like a dang Jason Witten clone to me. That guys a serious player on a team where he's starting. I can't wait to see how much we use him this year.

It should have. It nearly killed him.

He came back later and made an excellent tackle on Plax later.

Be the car or be the speed bump, Mike.

I think Willis will contain Witten a little but Witten's technique is nearly unstoppable.

He doesn't get by through speed, athleticism or natural ability. He has honed his craft and perfected his technique to simply beat the other guy.

To defend the league, all CB ARE defenseless against DEZ :)

If Willis is going man to man against Witten, then that's a good thing for us. Frees up so much more for Felix, Bennett, Phillips, who ever.

Don't see how that would fit the defenseless definition.

Defenseless” has formally been defined for 2011 and eight categories of “defenseless” players have been created: 1.) a player in the act of throwing a pass. 2.) a receiver attempting to catch a pass who has not clearly become a runner. 3.) a runner in the grasp whose forward progress has been stopped. 4.) a returner attempting to field a kick in the air. 5.) a player on the ground at the end of a play. 6.) a kicker or punter during the kick or during the return. 7.) a quarterback at any time after a change of possession. 8.) a player who receives a blindside block when the blocker is moving toward his own end line and approaches the opponent from behind or from the side (peel-back block).

Good stuff. I think we will be more focus on getting this running game back to where it needs to be. With the resigning of Fiametta and Dockery possibly starting I look for Felix to have a big day.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Sean Lee again. Last week was a monster game for him and I'm looking for him to put two solid games like that together.
