Zach Martin's deal was smart

Zach Martin's deal was smart, and here are reasons why I say that. Firstly, it's a reasonable amount for a guard. He was below the average salary, despite being one of the best guards in the league. Secondly, he's insurance for Dak. If Dak, being the QB, is the most important player on the team, then it stands to reason that the oline is in the top 5-6 of importance to a team. A happy and capable oline means that your QB will be better protected, thus allowing him to do his job more effectively. If you lose your QB, then your season is likely done. Thus, making sure Zach Martin is happy is insurance for Dak. Thirdly, it's not like it's going to impact Parsons this year anyway. Parsons can't be extended this offseason. Additionally, with the NFL finding new ways annually to boost their revenue, it stands to reason that the salary cap will increase. Thu, Zach Martin's deal will be a drop in the bucket.

All in all, it's reasonable amount that helps to ensure Dak is protected and able to do his job more effectively. Thus, Zach Martin's deal is smart.
I would say Zack played it smart. 33 year old guard realizing he still carries value but is getting older and his peers are due some $$$ next couple of seasons. He suddenly holds out as camp starts in what is a strong team that needs to keep its starting offensive linemen on the field at all costs.

I doubt Martin would give up this years pay so likely would return for game 1, but the Cowboys decided to please their anchor.

Its not a great deal. They got nothing out of it other than him reporting to camp. Which he would have done anyway. Now if they had gotten him to extend his contract and agree to play another year or two, that would have been something. But all they did was give him more money for the seasons he was already signed on to be here.

Perhaps, but it's important, imo, that he, being the leader of the oline (along with Tyron Smith), be in camp happy and ready to go. I get that he would have to report anyway, but I think it's a win win. He gets extra money, and his return is a boost that I think the team will enjoy.

And nothing wrong with that imo. I think you want to make sure one of the best players in the league is sorted out and taken care of.

Protect Dak Protect Dak Protect Dak............................OMG PROTECT DAK!!!!!

What has he done in the last 7 years with a stud offline esp when Fredricks was our center?
NADA..............2 playoff wins.:banghead:
Next, please..................

P.S. Yes Martin is a must for any QB including inepto but in the end...................NADA
It’s fair to question Dak, but I’m tired of the narrative about the great OLs.
Zach Martin has been great and consistent.
Tyron Smith was great for a few years, but of the 7 years you mention, he missed a ton of games with no decent backup. Frederick unfortunately left us in a real bind when he was first I’ll for a year, then retired unexpectedly. The center position was a wreck for 3 of those years, unless you liked Looney and Biadash’s rookie year. Do you remember Jonathan Cooper starting at guard or Chaz Green starting at OT for two years. All teams have injuries, but just like DT, Jerry always hoped 2-3 really good OLmen could make the whole 5 man line great, and he never invested in any decent depth.

I‘m not defending Dak, Romo, or Zeke, but our OL has seldom been great over the past decade. Right guard has literally been the only position we could count on year in and year out.

Zach Martin's deal was smart

Not nearly as smart as not trotting out, the any number of bums attempting to fill in for him during the regular season.

Exactly, and you need the oline to be effective for ANY QB to succeed.

This wasn't about the money at all for Jerry, it was the statement it would make to other players in the future about just ignoring your signed contract and demanding more money because their feelings are hurt. No one put a gun to their head to sign the previous deal. Were they also willing to give back some money if they didn't perform at an All Pro level? Doubt it.

Jerry bit the bullet like we all knew he would and caved in. It's history now and Zack better get back to his All Pro level again. Stay tuned for the next player though.
All Jerry did was embarrass himself though by opening his mouth saying he wasn't going to do something and still do it, his word means nothing to most at that point. It would have been better if he said he has heard of the holdout and will talk to respective parties regarding it and leave it at that. This way people can't use his words against him and it leaves the door open for him to go in either direction.

He wasn’t below average for a guard in the NFL. Out of 64 starting guards, he was the 6th or 7th highest paid. Top 10% is not “average.”

I'm not convinced it really did. The OL was mostly backups. All very very young inexperienced players.

Had we entered the season without Martin then whoever filled in would be 1 of 5 non starters.

We needed before that game, it didn't do anything to change that.
Yup, I would have to see all the starters, MINUS Martin to see the actual affect.

Fair enough, but I still think it is good that he's been taken care of as it doesn't seem to be an amount that will break our cap space, and we get a happy guard.

Making a deal, and then breaking that deal in order to ransom the teams season for more money is low class

In that regard I have no respect for zeke or martin. I can't believe people support martin for this. Because he made a deal he no longer liked, he was planning to sabotage his teammates season .

I do understand that, but, at the same time, I do think that Martin had a point. I think they should honour their deals, but I understand that they do watch their counterparts with deals. Plus, I'm all for the players earning as much as they can while they play as they only have about 3-10 years usually to cash in.

They have 3-10 years to play. It sucks for the guys on the cowboys that might value a chance at winning a superbowl as much as making a living. It really sucks for the guys at the bottom of the paychart who will not get that pay day

If he had come out in his interview, and called it like it was, I would not have a problem with it. Instead of smiling and answering stupid questions, he should have said, "I wanted more money and I don't care about the deal I made. I was willing to miss practice, miss games, and maybe sabotage the season to get what i want. Thank you and have a great night."

I think when the season ends or anytime before free agency, a player can do what martin did. But when you wait until after the draft, and even until training camp starts, to me it seems like you have bad intentions

Did Jerry do something, or was it Stephen?
