The first cut-up I want to show you is of Martin blocking New Orleans’ Akiem Hicks. A powerful defensive end at 6-5, 323 lbs., Martin is asked to block him one-on-one on a zone stretch play. This play is a staple in any zone-blocking scheme and it requires the guards to be able to be quick off the snap, but yet, they need to be able to have the strength not to be thrown around by a bigger player. Take a look at the play below:

Not only does Martin get off the snap quickly and engage with Hicks, Martin has enough power in his hands to move him off the line of scrimmage and make him completely irreverent in the play. Martin does a great job at putting himself between the ball and the defender, something you see more clearly in the second play:

Good pics and information.

I'm so glad Dallas drafted him over Johnny Manziel.

The trenches picks are not sexy but they make a big impact to a football team such as keeping QB healthy, helping the running game, resting the defense, etc.

Hm, can't see the tape, but it sure seems like when dude notices Murray running the other way, he tried to run back that way as well, and Martin just keeps hands on him.

It makes sense, no reason for him to keep trying to plow through if Murray is going in the opposite direction.

He makes a reach block on a guy that is a) lined up in the A gap opposite him from Fred and b) got off the ball well and started running down the line away from Martin. He reaches it and almost overruns the block he does it so easily even though Fred is not able to get a hand on the defender to slow him down. As it was he sealed the guy off and stoned his pursuit.

That type of athleticism is only rivaled by Tyron Smith. The technique with his hands and feet looks like a guy trying out new things and he is this effective? When he cleans everything up and gains that much more economy of motion and efficient transference of power he is going to be very very good. He could be an all pro guard in a year or two. He should already be sniffing the pro bowl.

i am pretty sure he tried to spin away from Martin and that is what he got for his efforts.

Well we thought Frederick would also be sniffing the Pro Bowl and we know how that went.

You make the probowl on reputation. Fred was a rookie last year.

I'd rather we not have 'pro bowl' talks when it comes to Fred and Zack already. Like others have said it's mostly a popularity contest, but also one that increases your value come contract renewal time, and I want this group to stick around for a long time! So once we've extended them long term on cap friendly deals, then sure, let the pro bowl and all pro talk start

It always has been hard for rookie lineman to make the pro bowl, not that it doesn't happen it is rare.

I'm not saying Martin hasn't been good but this particular play doesn't show much. The DT is playing the 3 his job is to ride him down the line and squeeze in case of cutback. I do think Free should have stayed on his path which would have led to a combo block with Martin. Then Martin would have had the chance to work his way to the lb.

It would have been more impressive if that run was to the right and he had reached the 3-technique and blew him off the ball.

Again not being negative nancy because it's not a bad play. Thanks for taking the time to post those shots.

Me too, and I was pretty happy the day of the draft. To most of this board's credit....it was a very popular pick on here. I was pleasantly surprised. He's on pace for rookie of the year if he keep this up. MUCH better rookie campaign than Clowney to this point. He'll destroy Clowney on Sunday if given the chance. Clowney is athletic, but weak compared to a guy like Martin.

First I just wanted to say, it's refreshing seeing our offense take advantage of situations and attacking. Look at the Saints defensive alignment here. You have the RE shaded over the C and LG while the RE is in a wide alignment. it also looks like we're in the 12 package because Witten and Hanna are on the field. I don't know if Rob really underestimated our run game but that's an easy call. A quick line adjustment and you have Fredbeard picking up the RE, Martin cutting off the DT, Tyron manhandling any blitzing LB that dares enter his zone, while sending Leary on a seek and destroy mission on the second level. Hanna also does a nice job cutting off his man. If that's not a seam, I don't know what is. It's awesome to see Tyron, Martin, and Fred completely taking guys out of the play 1on1. None of their guys stood a chance here.

Yeah Hicks' responsibilities were primarily run defense and what I guess was referred to as "ride down the line", and since the play ran away off tackle he was in a weird position, look at it even in pursuit. Hicks is good, he's not a scrub like we run out in our 3rd string DL. The guy can play. Even in pursuit Martin still has him on his outside shoulder, carrying him downfield. It may not be a wow play, but it shows perfect execution and that's out of the ordinary for any rookie OL.

If I'm a defensive coordinator, I'd be really annoyed trying to gameplan for Dallas, and it all starts up front.

What I like about Linehan's playcalling is that he hits then with the zone stretch a few times, and then gashes them with an inside zone, which looks exactly the right up until the RB gets the ball.

Watt will surely be a gigantic test for him today.

Think about that for a minute; not just a rookie lineman, but a damn rookie CENTER. That is nuts.

Pouncey made probowl and allpro as a rookie. Really you need several things to happen. Good play. Good team. Troy Aikman singing your praises on national TV (it used to be Madden).

I expect Watt to primarily test Leary and Free. Hopefully they match up better than the rookies he faced against Buffalo. Those guys weren't up to snuff.
