Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to make first ballot if you play interior offensive line. There's only been 3 in the last 35 years and all 3 have are top 100 players to ever play the game with 2 of them having played tackle as well.

Recently Guard Alan Faneca who has almost identical accolades to Martin, plays for a franchise that Canton is favorable to voting wise (Steelers), plus has a Superbowl got in like 5th ballot.

Of the main position interior line (both offense and defense) along with safety are all 3 brutal to get in.

Don't bother trying to explain yourself to delusional fans. Martin was great no doubt, but I just don't think he makes it to Canton to be honest.

I agree. History is not kind to interior OL when it comes to Canton.
Yanda didn't get in, and like Martin has 7 All Pro awards, and was considered a top 3 guard for his time. All Decade 2010 player too.

I think Yanda and Martin will get in at some point, but it was interesting that the HOF went short of max allowed this class.
If there was any one worthy of the 5th spot for 1st time, it was Yanda.

His play began slipping in 2022, and slipped more in 2023. PFF ratings (if you trust them) reflect that. However, in 2023, Martin and Tyler Smith had the lowest blown block rates among full-time starting guards. That's why they were All-Pros.

I think this is a very pertinent question. I don't recall how much, if any, Martin was slated to count against the cap for 2025.
