I suppose it doesn't but I'm kinda wondering why Stanford has another sophomore TE in his first year as a starter with almost twice as many yards and TD's. If he was as good as people are making then surely he'd be the standout no.1 rather than the blocking guy suggested by his stats.
Well when you're an elite blocker why not keep him in to block to help give the QB more time. I'm not saying he is great in pass catching but when passes came his way he caught them. He will develop more in that area, he has the tools

There were some teams that not only had better draft positions but multiple 1st or 2nd round picks, which makes the ranking even more impressive.

Pretty sure they aren't ranking the total talent haul. They are ranking how well teams did with the picks and position they had.

Nobody in their right mind would say that the Cowboys got more talent out of the draft than the Browns.

Take a look at Witten's college stats, very similar because he played for a team that used him blocking more than as a receiver.

3 seasons at Tennessee:

68 catches for 768 yards and 7 TDs.......total.

That's his college career; first year as a Cowboy -- 35 catches for 347 yards and 1 TD.
Year two -- 87 catches for 980 and 6 TD's.

We judge guys too soon.

Yep. I'd love to be wrong, but I saw Pac-12 linebackers hanging on to him pretty good in coverage. I don't know how he's going to separate versus NFL athletes.
I still don't quite know how Witten got so much separation against superior athletes.

Schultz and Eifert compare well.

Ertz smashes him on the bench but Schultz is a better jumper.

You can always get stronger but jumping is really a genetic thing and I do think it correlates to successful NFL players.

No so sure he's a "do-everything" TE. He didn't make too many catches and rarely scored.
So because he was in a run first offense at Stanford and didn't catch many balls he isn't a "do-everything" TE???

He's likely to never get 1000 yards receiving because of the depth the Cowboys have at that position but he is still a pretty decent catching TE.

You do realise a sophomore TE in that same offense last year had almost double his yards received right?

Agreed. He's another backup quality TE on a team desperate for a starter.

I hated our 4th round. I have to learn not to get excited with two 4th round picks considering our recent history. Wilber and Johnson, Tapper and Prescott and now Armstrong and Schultz.

That is because you have an unrealistic expectation of 4th round success and like to cherry pick negative outcomes.

Wilson, Hitchens, and of course Prescott have all started. Wilber got a second contract. Those are only the players that stayed with us and does not include those that went on to have careers elsewhere in the NFL.

Given the overall 25% success rate in the 4th round that is not bad at all. 3 hits means we can miss 9 times and still be average. We of course beat that curve.

I did like the Giants draft though Barkley for me is a reach.
Like the player but if I am going to take a non QB, pass rusher or LT second overall I would have taken Quenton Nelson.
I think Washington had an up and down draft.
Philly better hope Sweat and Goedert become key contributors, the rest of it was very average.
Not sold on LVE (though I understand the pick and upside is very good) but the rest of Dallas’ draft was tremendous.

We had an incredible draft, especially given our draft position.

One of the best drafting teams for years now. We need to name Will Mcclay the GM and be done with it.

He's probably the leading the voice of reason...but I do think they discuss things out as a team. Checks and balances...which is a good thing.

I think the better drafting in recent year is the result of 1) the addition of McClay, 2) more Stephen and less Jerry, and 3) Garrett. The Garrett haters may not like this, but I think there drafting will get worse if he is ever fired unless the next coach is very strong in evaluating personnel.

Garrett pushed to have a defined process and to follow the process. I think he and Stephen worked together to get McClay promoted over Ciskowski.

I don't know if Garrett is good at evaluating players. I get the feeling he isn't. It's OK because they have other people to evaluate players.

A lack of process is what caused many of the problems in the draft between the time Jimmy departed and McClay was promoted.

Everything was a seat-of-the-pants decision in drafts for many years. Larry Lacewell and Jerry would draft based on random reasons.

Parcells came along a fired Lacewell but then Parcells made more seat-of-the-pants decisions like drafting Barbie Carpenter and Jacob Rogers because their Dad's were coaches and/or played in the NFL.

When Parcells departed, Ciscowski was in charge of the draft. He was probably a good scout but was in over his head trying to manage the draft process.

Eventually Stephen, Garrett and McClay were able to implement a process for improvement. They reviewed the reasons for past failure and established processes to improve.
  • Involve the coaches in the eval process but don't let them just over-ride the scouts.
  • Narrow down the draft board for a better focus. Went from about 240 players to 120 players.
  • Lean towards drafting players they had spent time with in person. The 30 draft visits, etc...
Summary: They didn't replace the scouts evaluating the players. They implemented processes to better utilize the scouting resources they as already had.

The 4th round didn't do much for me either. I'm not impressed with the Armstrong pick at all.
