You need to stop bashing JJ, he's a NFL GENIUS !
If the reports are correct, and so far no one is denying them, the Cowboys told Terrell Owens they were going in a different direction last night. But why last night?
Surely the Cowboys didn't wait two months since the end of the season to discuss Owens' future. It's not like this idea finally cropped into Jerry Jones' head right before bed. The team could have officially cut Owens as early as Feb. 9, but as we saw with Pacman Jones' release, they wouldn't be averse to washing their hands of a guy they didn't want even before then.
It's not like Owens was due a roster bonus at any point this off-season, so money wasn't an issue on the timing.
Two theories: First, the team's off-season program begins later this month, so with a few weeks to get used to the idea of not having Owens, his former teammates shouldn't be distracted by his absence. Not that he showed up for the team workouts anyway . . .
But here's a second idea. A couple months ago when we talked about releasing T.O. on The Lunch Break (which airs today at 11 a.m. with Darren Woodson), Nick Eatman made a good point. If you cut T.O., he's going to the Commanders or the Giants, and he's going to play well enough to beat you.
Well as of March 4, it sure seems like the Giants and Commanders would have a hard time signing Owens after jumping into free agency head-first. Washington gave Albert Haynesworth $41 million guaranteed, and the Giants have signed several players. They shouldn't have the available cap space to afford the contract Owens will want.
If the Cowboys did wait for their division rivals to run out of money, it's one of the more savvy moves Jones has made. In 20 years on the job he seems to have learned some pretty neat tricks.
Go Cowboys!
